A farm near Toronto is closing their front lawn pumpkin patch for the rest of the season for the first time in over 30 years.

Downey's Farm has been well known as a great fall getaway less than an hour's drive from Toronto where you can pick out a prime pumpkin, but the iconic location will be a little different this year. Their front lawn patch won't be filled with pumpkins, and they cancelled their annual Pumpkinfest.

We have worked hard to keep the tradition alive this year as pumpkins have been on the front lawn every fall since 1986. Pumpkins will still be available for purchase every day until October 31st. Our Barn Market store is open daily from 9am to 5pm. We ask that you please limit the number of people from your household visiting the store. Our Farmyard Play Area remains open with limited capacity. Tickets must be purchased online prior to visiting the farm. The Farmyard Play Area is completely sold out until Tuesday, October 13th and we will not be releasing anymore tickets until the middle of next week.
"We have made the difficult decision to remove our front lawn Pumpkin Patch for the remainder of this fall season," reads an announcement Downey's made on social media. "We have worked hard to keep the tradition alive this year as pumpkins have been on the front lawn every fall since 1986."

The lawn is normally the site of numerous fall selfies and family portraits, so if you didn't get a chance to take pictures in the magical orange field yet this season you'll have to wait until next year.

"Since 1986, we have placed our pumpkins, one by one and by hand, on our front lawn. Each year, there are over 10,000 pumpkins that create 'The Sea of Orange'. These pumpkins have become a staple in family photo albums and often take over Instagram feeds in October," says Darlene Downey of Downey's Farm.

"With the announcement that Peel Region was moving to a modified Stage 2, we made the difficult but necessary decision to put all these pumpkins, again one by one, and by hand, and place them in bins. A fence was built around the area to monitor the number of guests in the area, as well as enforcing time limits."

Pumpkins are still available until October 31, the Barn Market store is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and the Farmyard Play Area is open with limited capacity, but tickets have to be purchased online prior to visiting and they often sell out. The farm also asks that people limit the number of people visiting from your household.

"Although this has had a huge impact on our business, we are committed to being part of the solution. As much as a pumpkin picture at Downey's Farm is part of our guests tradition, it is part of ours too," says Downey.

"We are optimistic that we will be able to build this display of pumpkins again next year. There are still thousands of pumpkins of all shapes and sizes available for purchase."

It's been three days since Toronto, Peel and Ottawa were relegated back to a version of Stage 2 lockdown under which gyms, movie theatres, casinos and museum exhibitions were closed down, and indoor service at bars and restaurants put on hold for at least 28 days.

And now, for all those elsewhere in Ontario who have been wagging their fingers at the three hotspot regions, Premier Doug Ford has indicated that extending the measures to other parts of the province is not out of the question right now.

"I always sit down with Chief Medical Officer Dr. Williams and the command table to get their input... I'm just praying that we don't have to expand this," Ford said at his media briefing on Tuesday, adding that it was painful to have to make the move to close down parts of the province last week.

Premier Doug Ford says he's "praying" that the government doesn't have to expand modified stage 2 to other jurisdictions -- especially the ones that border Toronto and Peel. #onpoli

Though he stated that there are no such plans for any additional regions firmed up at the moment, Ford vowed to continue to base future decisions about restrictions on the advice of the province's top health officials, as well as new case and hospitalization numbers.

"[We've got] to get our hands around the spike of 939 cases on Friday that we saw. We can't take anything for granted and we can't let our guard down," he told reporters today on the subject. "I'm always going to follow the command table's advice."

Though there is no set number for how many new cases per day in a region would qualify it to return to a more stringent version of pandemic lockdown, Ford said the public will be the first to know.

Health experts and residents of more rural parts of the province have been calling for tougher health and safety rules in Toronto for some weeks now, given that the populous urban centre has had the bulk of new cases during the second wave.

Has Ontario made public any specific thresholds for when a region will be moved from Stage 3 back to Stage 2? I've been googling and hunting around the province's website, and everything I can find is basically just "if the Chief Medical Officer of Health decides to"

The most recent epidemiologic summary from Public Health Ontario shows 746 new cases and nine additional deaths in the last 24 hours. A total of 624 more patients are also now considered resolved since yesterday, as are 85.2 per cent of all infections in the province.

Two hundred and thirty Ontarians remain hospitalized with the communicable disease, with 60 of them in the ICU and 34 requiring the use of a ventilator.

Testing, now by appointment only, remains fairly high at 31,233 — though below the mid-October target of 50,000 per day — and per cent positivity is very slowly starting to trend upwards again, albeit still hovering below 2.5 per cent.

Torteria San Cosme has quietly left their Kensington market location. The spot has been known as one of the city's best Mexican restaurants, serving some of the best sandwiches, churros and all-around cheap eats.

"It is with great sadness that we inform you that due to present circumstances, Torteria San Cosme will be closing its doors at Kensington Market indefinitely," reads an announcement on the restaurant's website.

"From the bottom of our hearts, we thank our die hard Torta fans for your following, our market neighbours for their friendship & to everyone who visited & supported our Torteria. We're not saying good bye, just yet, only hasta luego!"

"Unfortunately I was forced to make the sad and very hard decision to let our Kensington market shop go. Under the present circumstances we were just not able to make the necessary level of sales, the pressure & stress has been overwhelming," says Arturo Anhalt, founder and chef at Milagro Cantinas and Torteria San Cosme.

"San Cosme depended on high volumes more so in the weekends & during the summer, to make up for the slower weekdays & winter months. We literally lost our sales. The catastrophic combination of slower sales, delivery app fees, high rents and government restrictions have made it impossible for us to remain open."

It's not the first iconic spot Kensington Market has lost: Moo Frites was a casualty of the pandemic as well. However, all is not lost for fans of San Cosme's layered, spicy torta sandwiches.

"As of this coming weekend we're doing a virtual pop-up from our kitchen in Milagro on Mercer Street, taking orders online for pickup in our web page and through most of the better known food delivery and pickup apps," says Anhalt. "We are trying our hardest to get through this terrible situation."

That means starting the weekend of October 16, if you've had a San Cosme torta craving for months, you should finally be able to satisfy it.

Oh, to be a three-year-old again (read: the offspring of a wealthy celebrity).

Drake, who only posted photos of his son for the first time earlier this year, is evidently getting more comfortable sharing pics of his son for his fans to see.

It feels like only yesterday the rapper admitted to his son's existence following Push T's diss track. How time flies.

Toronto's Armenian community is demonstrating and speaking out in light of the ongoing conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan, and they're demanding that the federal government take swift action against Turkey's alleged involvement in the violence.

Protestors marched through Toronto last Friday to show support and solidarity for those suffering in Armenia and Artsakh, and they called on the government to condemn the military agression that has been ongoing for several weeks now.

A years-long conflict over the enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh, which is a self-proclaimed South Caucasion state situated within Azerbaijan but is home to ethnic Armenians, erupted into intense violence reminiscent of the Armenian Genocide of 1915 at the end of September.

The Armenian-backed Republic of Artsakh has been controlling the area since 1994 despite its location within Azerbaijan, though Artsakh's government is not recognized internationally.

According to The New York Times, the recent violence in the region is "the worst fighting the area had seen since a vicious ethnic war in the 1990s," and Armenian officials say Turkey is helping their ethnic Turkic ally Azerbaijan by sending arms, Syrian mercenaries and escalating the violence.

Roughly 75,000 Armenians have been displaced as a result of the conflict, and countless soldiers and civilians have been killed following the shelling of Armenian schools and hospitals in recent days — including Toronto-native Krisdapor Artin who died while fighting for Armenia earlier this month.

As a result, the Armenian disapora, including in Toronto, has been speaking out all over the world in an effort to urge foreign powers to get involved and help put a stop to the violence and agression.

Following Friday's protest, meanwhile, Toronto Mayor John Tory issued a statement in support of the city's Armenian community.

"I strongly support the federal government's decision to suspend the exports of military drones. I know they are committed to doing all that they can to help stabilize the situation and move towards peace," he continued.

"I condemn any form of terrorism or the use of military technology in this conflict and join the many calls that have been made thus far in encouraging a negotiated peace resolution, a ceasefire and protection of civilians in this region."

Halloween is just over two weeks away, and while the pandemic threatens to ruin the best time of the year for kids everywhere, some residents are trying to come up with safe and socially distant ways to keep the holiday alive.

Candy sticking is one suggestion that has gained a lot of traction online due to the fact that it is no-contact and adds in a new layer of fun, but there is another idea that has become popular in at least one Toronto neighbourhood.

Geoff Burke, who is known in some of the city's community Facebook groups for posting plumbing tips in a series he calls How NOT to Call the Plumber, is among those who have proposed the "candy chute" or "candy slide," an amusing way to get goodies to trick-or-treaters while still keeping the threat of COVID-19 in mind this year.

Burke has taken it one step further by turning the concept into a fundraiser, asking locals to donate much-needed funds to the Daily Bread Food Bank in exchange for a custom chute that he and his company Watermark Plumbing Services will provide and install.

"We've decided to put our plumbing skills to good use (outside of your home this time). We are trying to give twice in this campaign: First, providing much needed support for the Daily Bread Food Bank in these critical times, and second, helping to facilitate a safer Halloween!" Burke wrote in an Annex Facebook group over the weekend.

"For a minimum $25 donation, we are going to be running around the neighbourhood, providing and installing decorated candy chutes on the railings outside of the homes of anyone who would like one! We hope to help provide a safe way to trick-or-treat this year, while also giving back to the community."

Since posting about the initiative, Burke and his team have apparently received such a huge response — from nearly 300 people, an update says — that they've had to close requests for the time being.

But, the mechanism is definitely simple enough to construct and decorate for anyone who is still eager to celebrate spooky season.

Commenters on the thread have raved about what a cute and fantastic idea the festive little slides are, saying that "Halloween is saved!"

Other quirky ideas that have been proposed to save Halloween 2020 include using tongs to dispense candy into the hands of costumed young'ns, spacing out bags of sweets on a blanket or table, and building what the Alberta government refers to as a "candy catapult".

The Durham Catholic District School Board has launched an official investigation with the local police after a student's intended yearbook bio was replaced with a blatantly racist message and distributed to the entire student body.

Joshua Telemaque is a student at St. Mary Catholic Secondary School in Pickering, and he intended to honour his late grandmother in his yearbook message by writing "RIP Grandma. Thank you for guiding me through my four years of high school."

But instead of this heartfelt message being printed next to his name and photo, a racist message about Harambe, the gorilla that was shot and killed at the Cincinnati Zoo, was written in its place.

"Folks, racism is alive in Canada. This morning I received a frantic call from my sister, who was very distraught about how my nephew, Joshua, was portrayed in his high school yearbook," wrote Mayma Raphael, Telemaque's aunt, in a Facebook post this past weekend along with a photo of the yearbook page.

"Even though he has never caused any school issues or had any disciplinary actions against him, a star athlete at the school, excelling in football, basketball, and track and field — all this didn't shield him from racism's emotional and psychological impact."

Raphael's post was immediately met with widespread outrage and disgust, and the high school's principal, Susan Duane, issued a letter in response soon after.

In her letter, Duane referred to the comments as "malicious, hurtful and racist in nature," and said they "sincerely apologize to the school community for the offensive, hurtful and unacceptable nature of these comments."

Duane also said they've launched a formal investigation in collaboration with the Durham Regional Police, and that any students found to have participated in such a racist act will be subject to disciplinary action according to the Ontario Schools Code of Conduct and/or applicable policies of the Durham Catholic District School Board.

First and foremost, she said, the school is asking all students to return their yearbooks directly to the school's office today, on Oct. 13, and she added that a full inventory will be completed to ensure every copy is accounted for.

But in a press conference this past weekend, Telemaque said he was shocked and devastated following the incident, adding that he was holding back years and felt deeply hurt.

"He's now devastated, embarrassed, hurt, and disappointed. Since this was his final year at the school, he was really looking forward to his yearbook. Now his memory of his time at the school is forever ruined. How can something like this happen?" continued Raphael in her post.

"This cruel act echoes the many incidences of racism that many Black Canadian kids experience throughout their time in the education system. The school needs to take action to get this situation fixed. Our kids are suffering way too much."

As Telemaque's story continues to circulate on social media and beyond, one Good Samaritan has created a GoFundMe campaign to raise money to help pay for his post-secondary education.

Organizer Martin Buckingham wrote that it's Telemaque's dream to play football in university, and he started the fundraiser to allow the student's supporters to help him acheive that goal.

"Joshua Telemaque was the victim of a cruel joke that was published in his schools annual yearbook. The story of the racist event has gone world-wide on Facebook and Joshua has recieved support form thousands of peopel in Canada, the US, Europe, and the Caribbean," reads the campaign description.

"The purpose of this GoFundMe is to allow those supporters contribute to Joshua's post secondary education."

An incident at a Georgetown golf course over the weekend has yet another person learning the power of video footage and the fact that their views and actions are not in any way acceptable.

Gursher Dhillon, a member of Georgetown Golf Club, started recording when the family of golfers playing behind him began giving him problems about how long he was taking to finish his game on Saturday.

The video, in which a high-profile executive from Toronto investment firm Terra Cotta Financial Group uses a racial slur toward Dhillon and his golf partner, has since gone viral on social media.

"Not the first time encountering racism on a golf course but the first time recorded. The director of the course let them finish playing and told us to leave after showing him this video," Dhillon wrote in the Instagram caption of the clip, in which a racial slur is directed at him.

Other disgusting remarks in the confrontation, including "I’m going to shove that golf club right up your ass," allegedly took place just before Dhillon started filming.

It's that time of year again when Chinook and Coho salmon leap through Toronto's rivers as they carry millions of eggs, and it seems the city's trash pandas are taking the opportunity, as they always do, to join in on the fun in search of a snack.

In fact, one Toronto resident spotted multiple raccoons swimming and foraging in the waters where salmon were spawning in Etobicoke this past weekend.

"Piecing this together... Salmon are spawning up river and dying along the way," wrote George Diavolitsis on Twitter.

"Second day we've seen a raccoon swimming and foraging in the water, likely getting it's fill of sashimi. Yes raccoons are very clever animals."

A video posted by Diavolitsis shows a raccoon walking through the rushing waters, stepping from rock to rock, presumably looking to try and catch a fish as they swim by.

Around this time of year every year, thousands of salmon travel through the city's local rivers to lay their eggs, and many of the fish weigh roughly 20 kilograms and measure more than a metre long.

Pacific salmon die pretty much immediately after spawning, but their offspring then return to do it all over again the following year.

This, however, is assuming a clever raccoon doesn't get to them before their journey is complete.

Another video posted by Diavolitsis, meanwhile, shows a different raccoon entirely submerged in the water, seemingly swimming around with purpose.

In his tweet, the Twitter user remarked that he didn't realize raccoons were actually capable of swimming, but the residents who found a trash panda cooling off in their backyard pool this past summer will likely be the first to tell you the animals are extremely comfortable in the water.

We also know raccoons will quite literally do anything for a snack, so it's no wonder they're being spotted searching and swimming through Toronto's salmon-filled waters this fall.

Toronto's notorious anti-mask advocate strikes again, and this time he was arrested on a flight in Moncton, N.B.

The man, later identified as Chris Saccocia known as Chris Sky, was taken into custody after being arrested for causing a disturbance, according to the RCMP.

Sky was then released pending a future court appearance, which has been scheduled for next year. The RCMP escorted him back to the airport, where he took a flight out of the region.

A video posted on social media appears to show Saccoccia being arrested by police after allegedly causing a disturbance.

Last Week, Toronto police charged Sky, 37 and his wife Jennifer Saccocia, 34 with violating the federal quarantine act after he allegedly attended a rally less than two weeks after returning to Canada.

Saccoccia and a woman identified as Jennifer Saccoccia arrived at Toronto Pearson International Airport on Sept. 20 and were ordered to quarantine for 14 days.

The couple's joint Instagram account suggests that they were in Europe prior to their arrival in Toronto.

Police said both were spotted during an anti-mask, anti-lockdown demonstration on Yonge-Dundas Square on Sept. 26 and issued a provincial offence notice.

The couple are scheduled to appear in court at Old City Hall in Toronto on Thursday, Nov. 12.

Both Sky and his wife are also alleged to have attended another massive, maskless rally with over 500 other people in Yonge-Dundas Square on October 3.

Racetracks once were popular fixtures in Toronto’s neighbourhoods, but after time, have transitioned to places outside of the city.

The neighbourhood of Thorncliffe Park retains its name from a bustling racetrack. The racetrack operated from 1920 to 1952.

An aerial shot of Thorncliffe Park racetrack. Courtesy City of Toronto Archives.

The site of Thorncliffe Park was originally owned and operated by businessman and racehorse breeder Robert T. Davies, and was located on a stretch of farmland east of Millwood Road and south of Eglinton Avenue.

Robert T. Davies owned the Dominion Brewery on Queen Street, a rival to his brother Thomas Davies’ brewery the Don Brewery located a few blocks away.

Horses racing at the Thorncliffe Park racetrack in 1929. Courtesy City of Toronto Archives.

Davies named his newly-acquired property Thorncliffe Farms. The Thorncliffe Stables were also part of the property, where Davies bred both thoroughbred and standardbred horses. He raced the horses on the same property.

After Davies’ death in 1916, his estate sold the property to an American couple, James O’Hara and Mathilda Bryan, who built the Thorncliffe Park racetrack.

A horse outsite the Thorncliffe Park stable. Courtesy of City of Toronto Archives.

The racetrack was the fourth built in Toronto, having been preceded by Woodbine, Dufferin and Long Branch. The racetrack complex was extensive: it had bleacher seating for 4,000 patrons, stables for over 600 horses, and a clubhouse.

An exterior shot of the Thorncliffe Park racetrack. Courtesy City of Toronto Archives.

The racetrack was described as the most beautiful racetrack in all of Toronto, and was host to the Prince of Wales Stakes, the Clarendon Stakes, and the My Dear Stakes.

A beloved racehorse among spectators was Mugwump, who was said to stop and look at the crowd before racing, as if deciding whether or not running the race was worth it.

Although racing was a popular spectator sport, attendance at Thorncliffe Park was hindered somewhat by its lack of accessibility, Millwood Road and Laird Drive being the only way to reach it.

Two township councils, the East York Town Council and the Town of Leaside, agreed to build the Leaside Viaduct (more commonly known as the Leaside Bridge), linking Donlands and Pape Avenues to Millwood Road.

Construction was started in January of 1927 and finished in October of the same year. The popularity of horse racing helped to spur the construction of more of the city’s infrastructure.

Construction of the Leaside Bridge in 1927. Courtesy City of Toronto Archives.

The racetrack was eventually shut down in 1952, having been sold off to developers who constructed one of the first high-rise neighbourhoods in the city.

The area around the Thorncliffe Park neighbourhood is full of reminders of this piece of Toronto’s history. Street names Grandstand Place and Milepost Place commemorate the racetrack. The scenic Leaside Park borders the former south end of the racetrack.

I've never really felt the need to be a recognized regular at a bar or restaurant. To riff off an old adage, I never wanted a place where "everybody knows my name."

But alas, The Hive became that place for me. And that's why I'm writing an obit for it.

When it opened as Raiders eSports Centre in 2016, before it was rebranded as The Hive, it was a basement gaming bar located a block west of Yonge and St. Clair.

What it became was a community centre — truly a hive for so many gamers with diverse backgrounds and interests.

BlogTO once called Raiders "an esports mullet," and I don't think this was wrong. Until the rebrand, the venue tried to be a polished pub with lots of wood and leather.

While "The Pit" in the back was the eSports equivalent of a skatepark — everything you needed to perform in one location, I remember sitting in a booth with a friend on our first outing, discussing how it felt like it was trying to be too polished to be a true gamer den.

After the rebrand, it became more of a communal basement living room with a bar — exactly where a lot of gamers feel most at home.

From beers to business meetings, The Hive will be missed.https://t.co/URlQINyUH0

Justin Baisden is the organizer of Fight For The 6ix," a regional fighting games qualifying tournament. Over Discord’s chat feature he tells me that even though he lives in Hamilton, a city with a great bar scene, it was always The Hive that he and friends ended up at.

When he first saw The Pit, he knew he needed to make it the arena for his events. He was happy when The Hive jumped at a chance to help out.

"I remember thinking to myself, wow! What a unique place. I mean, it just kept going! I needed to use it for my events and Daniel [co-owner of The Hive] and his team always made the effort to make me feel like they were working with me," he said.

"Even if it meant they had to send someone down to the bar at 8 a.m. in the morning to let players in and set up. I remember that happening once."

Last year, I became a fan and follower of Blizzard Entertainment's Overwatch League during their second major professional season, where teams adopted a city franchise mode. Toronto got a team called the Toronto Defiant, and I was looking for a group to celebrate eSports pride with.

That's when I met Rich Ng and joined his Toronto Alpha Flight [Toronto AF] eSports fan community.

In October of 2018, Ng had returned to Toronto from New York, where he started an official supporters' club out of a Lower East Side coffee shop that helped out in the community while giving fans a place to socialize.

He wanted to do the same in Toronto, as Baisden did with Fight For The 6ix. The Hive helped Ng's goal take off.

"They allowed me to come in and fully run the floor for every Toronto Defiant game," says Ng. "And it's the reason I was able to connect with so many people."

For Ng, losing The Hive is the same as losing a hub of genuine human connection in this city. It makes him sad because "every time we lose a place like this, it pushes us further away from the things that make the gaming space, or any cultural space, so wonderful. It pushes us away from one another."

Unfortunate that The Hive is closing down. So many memories. Our first two XIV Ontario Community meetups. Extra Life 25-hour game day marathons.

Some of my best memories at The Hive involve Ng's Toronto AF meetups.

I would park myself on my favourite corner couch, Toronto Defiant jersey on, chicken tenders and beer in front of me, as we cheered the big plays and wins.

Inversely, this is where I leaned on the crew and ate cookies to absorb the sadness of missing the playoffs, again and again.

But The Hive brought together more than just eSports fans and competitors.

Liam Rollins, a manager of the space since it opened in 2016, watched the bar become a hive of activity for so many other groups in the Toronto gaming community.

At the time, he was a self-proclaimed "bro gamer" — not fully invested in the life and the community... but working in the community changed that.

"I'd play games on consoles occasionally, but my girlfriend was way more of what you’d call a 'hardcore gamer.' She was more involved in the community than I was, but I got going at The Hive," said Rollings. "And I learned so much about just how massive the gaming community is in Toronto, and how much people really care about it.”

Rollings has tended bar and organized events for big names like Ubisoft Toronto, as well as lesser-known entities like Pink City — a Toronto gamer-inspired apparel company that throws a mean block party and Twitch Toronto meetups, which are events that help streamers in Toronto grow audiences.

He says that the recently-shuttered venue taught him how seriously people take their gaming identity.

"I’ve worked in a lot of bars around the city that have a crowd, you know, a group of people who take pride in what a place means to them. The Hive became special — especially after the rebrand — because we had one of those identities for gamers," said Rollings.

"We were naming drinks and dishes after things that resonated. People felt passionate about who we were and what we did. They took it seriously."

Rollings organized a goodbye party for The Hive, held on September 20th. It stung a fair bit for him, because he had to do so with masking and distancing rules — everything short of checking temperatures at the door.

The bar even used the red solo cups, which Rollings feels bad about from an environmental standpoint, but it was all in the name of safety. He tells me over Discord that he thanks God they haven't had any positive test alerts yet, but wishes he could have done more for The Hive as a sendoff.

"Like I said before, The Hive was special. So we would have liked to give more back to the community that made it so. A three-day event with a DJ and a dancefloor like the Pink City parties and there would have been tournaments. We really would have tried to give back."

Rollings described the importance of The Hive to Toronto's gaming community better than I ever could, so I’ll let him have the last call and simply say thanks for the memories.

“Will we see a place like this again? Definitely not before COVID ends. In the next two years? It’s not likely. In the next five? Absolutely!" said the eSports bar's former manager.

"But it's going to take a community effort like the one that made The Hive. It’s going to take investors, industry members, but most importantly, it’s going to take a community who's passionate about being a part of it."

Park Lawn Cemetery is one of the largest graveyards in Toronto.

The beauty of this 73-acre cemetery belies its deep connection to local farming lore, which — like many things dating back to the 1800s do — allude to dark and murky history.

Park Lawn Cemetery is the largest cemetery in Etobicoke.

As the largest cemetery in Etobicoke, there are more than 100,000 interments here, ranging from local farming families to a number of politicians and musicians such as Jeff Healey.

The most beleaguered mayor in Toronto history, Rob Ford, rests here. So does his father, Doug Ford Sr., and Mr. York himself: former mayor of the municipality York, Fergy Brown.

The cemetery has more than 100,000 interments across 73 acres.

But of the thousands of people buried here, 75 of them, ranging from toddlers to kids in their late teens, lie in unmarked graves.

Two mass graves in Park Lawn Cemetery is where you'll find the remains of 75 home children: youths who came to Canada in ships from the U.K. to find work between 1869 and 1949.

Those buried here range from local farming families to politicians.

It's a tragic part of the country's history. Approximately 35,000 children were believed to have been brought over to Canada by Barnardo's, a still-existing children's charity started in England by a Christian Evangelist named Thomas Barnardo.

Many came as farmhands and indentured servants who were contracted out to rural families across the country. Many were terribly abused, worked to the bone and lived overall miserable lives.

The cemetery is also home to two mass gravesites where 75 Home Children are buried.

Some were murdered by their employers, some died from tuberculosis, or during childbirth. But regardless of the cause of death, their bodies were thrown into the same plots for more than 50 years, never to be identified by friends or family.

But thanks to an organization called the British Home Children Advocacy & Research Association and $16,000-worth of donations, a granite monument was placed on one of the plots in 2017, which pays tribute to thousands of those poorly treated youths.

The plots sit in the oldest part of the cemetery, in the northwest corner.

Many Torontonians have used the BHC's online registry to see if their ancestors were "Barnardo Home Boys" (Girls were sent to Barnardo's receiving and distribution home in Hazelbrae, Peterborough).

The cemetery is open for visitors, history buffs and nature-lovers alike.

"The graves of the 75 children buried at Park Lawn Cemetery is a poignant reminder that although many children thrived in Canada, many did not," said the organization.

"Our country is dotted with the graves of lost Home Children, sadly, many will never be found."

Park Lawn's Paradise Mausoleum was opened in 1999.

The two mass graves are definitely one of the most interesting, if not morbid parts of Park Lawn's history.

Far less intriguing is the fact that part of Park Lawn (named the Humbervale Cemetery until 1915) almost became a residential subdivision in 1912, if not for the work of the Humbervale Cemetery Defence Assocation.

Seeing deer is not uncommon here, due to the proximity to the forests on the bank of the Humber River.

Today, the gravesite's manicured collection of trees and plants belie its past. Don't be surprised if you see an assortment of Canadian wildlife, from Blue Jays to families of deer grazing among the tombstones.

Today, it would be hard to imagine a scenario in which it was difficult to find and consume alcohol in the city, so long as we're talking pre-last call. But in the second decade of the twentieth century, Tory Toronto was almost as conservative as they come, and damn proud of it.

According to Randall White's Too Good to be True: Toronto in the 1920s, the Ontario Temperance Act passed in 1916, under the Conservative government of William Howard Hearst.

It prohibited the sale of booze in Ontario, with the exception of "medicinal, mechanical and sacramental purposes" (sound familiar?).

At the time of the enactment into law, it wasn't entirely clear whether the OTA would remain in place after the ending of the Great War, When a provincial referendum was held following the 1919 provincial elections, however, the majority of Ontario voters were still in favour of prohibiting the sale of the "demon rum" and other liquors.

The new law was reflective of the larger social trends that were taking place in North America.

The temperance movement was quite successful in Great Britain and the United States, and ensured the passing of laws that made the practice of selling alcohol illegal.

One of the most active temperance groups was the Women's Christian Temperance Union, which had a local branch located at Gerrard West and Victoria Streets.

In the United States, the sale of alcohol was prohibited under the federal law, while in Canada it varied from province to province.

There was a short-lived federal ban during the "emergency period" near the end of World War I that applied to all of Canada. By 1916, every province had enacted legislation against it, with the exception of Quebec.

However, the OTA did not prohibit the practice of buying alcoholic beverages. When the brief federal prohibition was lifted, permanently sober and thirsty Torontonians were able to legally order cases of their favourite alcoholic indulgence from Montreal.

This practice soon met with criticism from temperance activists. Indeed, it seems that the OTA had no teeth, as it failed to dissuade Torontonians from drinking, although it directly contributed to the profits of opportunistic merchants in Montreal.

As a result, another referendum was held on April 18, 1921. This time, the voters were faced with the question, "Shall the importation and the bringing of intoxicating liquors into the province be forbidden?

Most of them voted in favour of the ban on the import of alcohol in Ontario, although by that time, most Torontonians opposed it.

One of the exceptions under the OTA allowed for the sale of alcohol when prescribed by a doctor to his or her patient.

Thus, many drinkers started to experience reoccurring infirmities of various sorts that could only be cured with alcohol. Their "plight" inspired sympathy in many doctors, who were glad to treat their patients with alcohol sold in pharmacies in quart bottles.

In 1920, it was found that ninety percent of the prescriptions for medicinal alcohol weren't medically warranted. It was also alleged that one doctor "treated" two thousand patients in one month, while another saw 487 patients in one day.

A year later, doctors were legally bound to issue such prescription no more than forty times a month. Despite increasing legal measures seeking to control the sale and the consumption of liquor, Torontonians remained faithfully persistent in their efforts of obtaining alcohol.

Can you blame them?

Since the CN Tower opened to the public, only two times has someone actually jumped off the top of it. Both times, it has been the same man - maverick daredevil Dar Robinson.

The steel-balled stuntman was paid a cool $150,000 to double for Christopher Plummer and jump off the Tower for the exciting conclusion to a 1982 (but filmed in 1979) heist gone awry rom-com Highpoint, itself a high point in a middling, convoluted Canuxploitation snoozer.

Academy award winner Plummer was really slumming it here as James Hatcher, a sleazy conman who embezzles millions from a joint CIA/Mafia sting operation.

Original Dumbledore Richard Harris and throaty pre-Vacation Beverly D'Angelo give chase, as well as bumbling assassins played by customary Cancon haunts Saul Rubinek and Maury Chaykin, who also scheme to claim the money for themselves.

After a series of increasingly slapstick encounters, all the players meet at the CN Tower for the film's climax.

Hilariously (in light of his mammoth contribution) credited as only the 2ND stunt performer, Dar Robinson's amazing Highpoint stunt in 1979 earned him instant untouchable world-wide cred, as previously only one other person had dared jump the 1,170-ft high tower, and that fellow did it when the structure was only half constructed.

Dar had cut his stunt teeth on glossy big budget disaster movies like The Towering Inferno and Concord: Airport '79, but his fearless parachute jump in Highpoint signalled a bold new upping of the ante - a 700 foot free-fall relying on a concealed parachute to be opened at precisely the last possible moment.

The following year, Dar dutifully dropped 220 feet out of a Hyatt Regency Downtown in Atlanta for the tough neo-noir Sharky's Machine, directed by his good friend Burt Reynolds: "In terms of sheer courage" noted Reynolds, "Dar had no peer."

With no parachute or harness, Dar instead relied on an inflatable mattress to break his fall, setting the record for highest wireless free-fall jump in a film (he went on to claim over 20 stunt records).

Reynolds was so impressed he gave Dar a villainous on-screen role as psycho albino killer Moke in his 1985 adaptation of Elmore Leonard's Stick.

Around the same time, weekly TV series That's Incredible! was pushing the boundaries of human endeavour in the name of entertainment, usually featuring breathtaking stunts: "Don't try this at home" was the show's popular catch phrase.

Hosted by the perfectly chiseled John Davidson, NFL legend Fran Tarkenton and sultry blonde Cathy Lee Crosby, That's Incredible! perhaps laid the ground for our YouTube era fascination with short clips of people doing cool stunts, hurting themselves, or very nearly killing themselves.

Dar saw That's Incredible! as a great forum for yet another next level stunt, revisiting Toronto and taking the tower again. However this time Dar wanted to try something different, so there would be no parachute.

Dar and his team instead constructed a single 1/8" (3mm) wire attached to a breaking system controlled by his best friend and assistant "Rocketman" Ky Michaelson, which would be pulled at the very last moment, stopping only a short distance from the ground.

No stranger to mixing precise mathematical projections with meticulous planning and devil-may-care brassiness, Dar remained an unshakeable force of nature.

However, with no Hollywood film crew a la Highpoint (which ironically had not even been released theatrically when Dar returned to leap from the Tower again), things were slightly more diy.

After visiting the Tower, Ky quickly became concerned: "I saw that the base of the building actually flared out towards the bottom. This caused a vortex or a tornado effect with swirling very unstable winds.

We set up some equipment to measure what the wind was doing at different levels. We found out that the winds were doing different things at every level up the tower."

The night before the jump, Dar declined a steak dinner and drinks with host Cathy Lee Crosby. "This was not like Dar at all" recalls Ky. Was the world's greatest stuntman in danger of losing his bottle?

While incredibly everything panned out, disaster was moments away. Not long after disconnecting Dar, the wind snapped the cable off the top of the Tower, chipping pieces of concrete off as it hurtled towards the ground.

Questions of safety were raised at City Hall and Queen's Park, and while there was no outright banning of such stunts, here we are many years later and none have materialized.

Finding someone to insure such foolhardiness may play a part, but that certainly didn't stop Super Dave Osborne from trying in the mid-1980s, natch.

Dar Robinson went on to perform more outrageous stunts in classic B-movies like Police Academy (also filmed in Toronto), Turk 182, To Live and Die in LA, and Vamp.

Just as he had scored A-list cred with the amazing stunt work in Richard Donner's original Lethal Weapon (1987), Dar was killed in a motorcycle accident while shooting a forgettable thriller entitled Million Dollar Mystery.

The movie was dedicated to him (as was Lethal Weapon), a Hollywood first, and as well he won a posthumous 1995 Academy Award for his innovations in the world of stunt work.

Sadly, not many people in Toronto know about Dar Robinson. Now that Edgewalk has popularized thrill seeking atop the CN Tower, it would be nice to think that Dar's amazing stunts for both Highpoint and That's Incredible! warrant a little more than internet curio.

Perhaps a bronzed statue would be appropriate, seated on the edge of the rooftop, glaring down at the impossible heights and giving a thumbs up to fellow edgewalkers everywhere?

A restaurant run by one of Toronto's most recognizable chefs has just closed its doors after a decade.

You may have seen Lynn Crawford on Food Network Canada, but sadly one place you won't be seeing her again is at the restaurant she used to run with Lora Kirk, Ruby Watchco.

"10 incredible years, on to our next chapter," says Chef Lynn Crawford. "Nothing other than a family decision and these days especially, family is everything."

The restaurant was known for its stunning use of local ingredients, as well as a popular private dining space.

"We have closed Ruby Watchco after 10 incredible years!! Many thanks to all of you that have supported us over the past decade and special thanks to our talented team who were the heart and soul of Ruby Watchco," reads an announcement on their website. "We will certainly miss you and look forward to cooking for you all very soon!"

A large movie production in Toronto left some people wondering why they had to stay away from family for Thanksgiving weekend but a large group could gather for the filming.

The production for a Disney movie called Spin went ahead as concerns of the spread of COVID-19 mounted this week. The movie is scheduled to film from Oct. 5 to Nov. 20 in Toronto with at least some of the filming happening in the north end of High Park.

Another person wrote blogTO noting how confused they were over the film sets they had seen first-hand.

"Guess what is happening on film sets in Toronto? Approx. 150 kids, teenagers and adults are unmasked and dancing elbow to elbow with each other, even exchanging hugs," they wrote.

A City of Toronto spokesperson explained that prior to the reopening of production, unions involved in film production, along with producers associations and levels of government, negotiated health and safety protocols, called Section 21, to protect their members.

"These protocols have been approved by the Ministry of Labour, and they set very high guidelines for on-set safety. These applied to the shoot in High Park," the city spokesperson said. "The public is not involved as they are not permitted access to film-related workplaces."

All people involved in filming follow health and safety mandates, a Disney Channel spokesperson told blogTO in an email.

"As we begin filming series and movies that employ several hundred people in Toronto and Vancouver, we have diligently prepared to provide a safe work environment, including when filming takes place in public spaces that are temporarily inaccessible to the general public," the spokesperson wrote.

"We require that our production partners, crew and all cast members adhere to local laws including a two-week quarantine for some cast. They must also adhere to each production’s frequent Covid-19 testing, wear protective equipment and social-distance while on the set and not filming a scene," the statement continued.

"We are especially appreciative of the Canadian public for their cooperation while our movies and series film in public spaces."

But not everyone was upset to see the film crews rolling.

Our city might have had a reputation as "Toronto the Good," but our history's littered with weird, wonderful and sometimes, downright strange phenomena, from baby making contests to mysterious tunnels.

Here are some of the strangest things to have ever happened in Toronto.

The great Toronto mirage of 1894

On August 16, 1894, Toronto appeared on Buffalo's shoreline. The phenomenon known as Fata Morgana was documented a number of times in the region during the 19th century and it happens when specific atmospheric conditions made far away places seem super close together.

The Great Stork Derby

After notorious prankster and businessman Charles Vance Millar died in 1926 , one of the requests in his will stated that part of his estate go to the woman (or women) who bore the most children within the next decade. By 1936, four women split $125,000 - each one gave birth to nine babies in 10 years.

The Cabbagetown Monster

While searching for his cat in a tunnel off of Parliament Street, as the Torontoist writes, a man reportedly saw a furry creature that told him to "Get out, get out," before running away. The Toronto Sun reported this monster story in March 1979.

The underground room at King and Simcoe

While building the new Massey Hall (today's Roy Thomson Hall), workers hit something solid right under Simcoe Street. It turned out to be a small room with a table, a chair, two mugs and a locked safe. The safe disappeared before anyone got a chance to peek inside, so the mystery remains unsolved.

The York University Tunnel

Remember when someone discovered a seven metre-long tunnel near York University? Even though it turned out to be pretty benign, the mysterious tunnel captivated Toronto and also made it on to an episode of NPR's This American Life.

Rosedale is filled with lush greenery, gorgeous homes and winding roads that welcome you to the neighbourhood. Known for being one of Toronto’s wealthiest neighbourhoods, Rosedale has held this title for more than 150 years.

The land was settled as an estate built by Upper Canada politician, John Small in the 1820s. It was sold a few years later to a member of the Family Compact, William Botsford Jarvis.

William Botsford Jarvis hosting a party in Rosedale in 1861. Photo by Toronto Public Library.

According to the Don Valley Historical Mapping Project, the estate covered the land from Rosedale Road across the ravine, east of the bridge over what was Castle Frank Brook.

To avoid taking the hills to the house, Jarvis created a new pathway, which is now known as Park Road.

Rosedale Ravine looking north from Roxborough Street in 1913. Photo by Toronto Archives.

His wife, Mary Jarvis is credited for giving the neighbourhood its name, after the beautiful wild roses in the area.

Rosedale’s classic winding streets are said to follow the paths that Mary would frequent and horseback ride through. It’s believed that this is one of Canada’s first neighbourhoods to have curved streets.

After years of building and living in their estate, the Jarvis family sold the property in 1864. This change essentially split the neighborhood in two: North and South Rosedale, separated by Park Drive Ravine which runs right through the neighbourhood.

This led to a surge in residential developments, and the following decades saw the building of houses that Rosedale is known for today.

Prior to this, North Rosedale was home to St. Andrews College and the Rosedale Golf Club.

St. Andrew's College Rosedale Campus in 1910. Photo by Toronto Archives.

In 1926, however, the college moved to a larger campus in Aurora, "away from the perceived negative influences of the city," according to their website. After the golf course area was bought to become North Rosedale, it too was relocated, up north by Lawrence Park.

Rosedale Golf Club House in 1921. Photo by Toronto Archives.

Standing on a former part of St. Andrew’s College grounds is Rosedale Park. Formally known as Rosedale Field and owned by the Rosedale Golf Club, it was used as a stadium that could accommodate more than 10,000 spectators.

You may have even heard of their past team — the Toronto Argonauts. After the area was redeveloped, the City of Toronto acquired it to become the park it is today, filled with tennis courts, a skating rink and baseball diamond.

After these changes, Rosedale turned even more residential when Victorian, Georgian and Edwardian style mansions began popping up, inciting wealthy families to move into the already affluent area. Presently, the Toronto Historical Board lists many of these buildings as Heritage Properties.

If you walk through the neighborhood right now, the houses aren’t the only symbol of Rosedale’s rich history. The beautiful Chorley Park may be filled with dogs and picnics, but it used to be the spot of Ontario’s fourth Government house.

Chorley Park Government House in the 1900s. Photo by Toronto Archives.

Standing only from 1915 to 1959, all that remains of the building is its bridge and depressions in the soil of where it once stood. To save money, the City of Toronto demolished Chorley Park and created a public park under its name.

Finding new uses for historic sites is a trend in Rosedale, as we can’t talk about the neighborhood without mentioning the North Toronto railway station, otherwise known as one of the best LCBOs in the city.

The historic building and clock tower on the northwest edge of Rosedale was built in 1916 as a Canadian Pacific Railway station, but was closed in 1931 following the opening of Union Station downtown.

The North Toronto Railway Station in 1939. Photo by Toronto Public Library.

In the following years, it had brief uses to welcome the British monarchy and escort soldiers post-Second World War, but it remained largely unused until its restoration in 2003 when the inside was transformed into an LCBO.

While Rosedale shares many similarities with other Toronto areas, convenient transit, an abundance of boutique fitness clubs and local businesses, there is one thing that really sets it apart.

Because it was built along ravines and surrounded by so much green space, traffic and vehicle noise in Rosedale is very minimal. For an area that is quite close to the hustle and bustle of the city, its serenity is truly unmatched.

TTC bridge running over the Rosedale Ravine in 1967. Photo by Toronto Archives.

The area is filled with biking, running and walking trails, many of which have been there for centuries.

Milkman’s Lane, a trail that joins the neighbourhood to the Don Valley trail network, has been around for more than 130 years. It only spans about 300 metres but connects to kilometres worth of hiking paths.

Rosedale is one of those neighbourhoods that really wears its history on its sleeve.

The 1960s were a massive decade for architecture in Toronto. In addition to the birth of New City Hall and the TD Centre, Brutalism left its mark on the city with grand concrete structures that would inspire designers to reach new heights in the 1970s. In the span of 10 years, Toronto had embraced modern design and there was no looking back.

Here are some magnificent Toronto buildings that rose in the 1960s.

University of Toronto Scarborough

John Andrews' University of Toronto Scarborough campus was one of the most significant and studied architectural works in this city for decades after it opened in 1964. The Brutalist complex is still considered one of the chief examples of this brand of architecture and is surprisingly human in orientation when you explore the space.

O'Keefe Centre (now Meridian Hall)

One of architect Peter Dickinson's most grand Toronto works, the O'Keefe Centre opened in 1961. Recognizable for its stunning marquee canopy (a smaller version of which could be seen at the Four Seasons Motor Hotel), it now serves as the base of the L Tower.

The Colonade

I doubt that many young people find much beauty in the Colonade nowadays, but architect Gerald Robinson's concrete palace near Bloor and Avenue Rd. was a marvel when it opened in 1964. It's aged well, but concrete is no longer as sought after a building material.

Yorkdale Shopping Centre

Mall architecture can be as bland as it comes, but Yorkdale was a stunning exception. Completed in 1964, the majority of the mall was designed by John Graham Jr., who's most famous for the Seattle Space Needle.

John Andrews also took part in designing the Simpson's department store. Much of the original work has been lost through renovations, but some remains.

City Hall

This was the building that changed everything in Toronto. The winner of a massive international design competition in the early part of the decade, Viljo Revell's modernist municipal headquarters still looks like it comes from the future.

Bloor-Danforth Subway Stations

There's an understated elegance to the Bloor-Danforth Subway Line that's easy to spot if you look past the grimy walls and aging signs. Architects John B. Parkin and A. G. Keith provided a consistent design that alternated between five colours of tile and four versions of trim.

Station entrances like the rounded one found at Castle Frank have become iconic over the last 50 years.

The TD Centre

Surely the second most important building that rose in Toronto during the decade, the black steel of Mies van der Rohe's TD Centre was like nothing Toronto had ever seen at the time. The city's modern Financial District was born with this imposing complex.

20 Prince Arthur

Uno Prii deserves more respect for being the pioneering architect that he was. As the Toronto began to see a boom in concrete slab apartment buildings, he injected Googie-influenced style into his buildings, many of which can be found scattered around the Annex today. 20 Prince Arthur (1968) is the cream of the crop, though.

Ontario Science Centre

Raymond Moriyama's Ontario Science Centre is a building that needs to be experienced from both afar and within to get a true appreciation of its best attributes.

Despite its sprawling size, from a distance one sees how well it blends into the ravine wall, the topography of which is also used to invite the natural surroundings into the building as one descends each floor.

University of Toronto Medical Sciences Building

Few concrete structures are quite as intricately adorned as the Medical Science Building at U of T. While it takes up a huge plot of land at King's College Circle, it somehow manages to be unimposing.

Designed by architect Peter Goering, the building is perhaps best known for its concrete flourishes, which were the work of artists Ted Bieler and Robert Downing.

Cameron House is a historic music venue and bar located at 408 Queen St. West, and now the location is also home to a brand new barber shop on the second floor.

Cameron House Barbers officially opened its doors to the public on Tuesday, Oct. 6 in the same building as the venue, which has been a fixture in the Toronto music scene for years.

The project was spearheaded by local barber Ashley Nevin, and the establishment is run entirely by women.

Nevin says the goal for the new business was to combine traditional barbering with modern convenience, something she believes is lacking in the modern-day barbering industry.

"As a barber I've seen a gap in the industry from the traditional, cash-only, walk-in-only mentality, to a newer generation who wants the same old-school quality with the accessibility of a modern shop," she said.

All along Toronto's Humber River, scenic trails run from north to south on the banks of this Lake Ontario tributary — east to west, if on the West Humber Trail.

There's no shortage of watery vistas and bridges all the way from Steeles down to the Martin Goodman Trail.

You can find the lookout bridge south of Lambton Woods and north of Dundas Street West.

One such lookout sits right before a bend in the river, before the Humber River Recreational Trail hits Dundas Street.

Emerge south on the trail from the dreamy canopy of Lambton Woods and you'll find the faded turquoise pedestrian bridge, resting atop concrete footings: the only remnants of the Guelph Radial Line.

The turquoise bridge used to be part of the Guelph Radial Line.

Today, the bridge is the perfect pit stop for hikers taking the trail from James Gardens (a good place to park if accessing the area by car), perhaps on the way down to the Humber Marshes.

The bridge runs beneath the Lambton Canadian Pacific Railway Bridge before crossing the Humber.

When it was originally built in 1917, the bridge included a 61-metre trestle before an extension was built in 1925. The Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) describes it as "a high degree of achievement for its time."

The centre part of the bridge has a number of benches with a great view of the CN bridge.

The Guelph Radial Line no longer exists: it operated from 1917 to 1931 as an electric rail between Guelph and Toronto, the most extensive line of the Toronto Suburban Railway.

All that's left now are the concrete footings that hold up the main parts of the pedestrian bridge.

The Lambton Canadian Pacific Railway Bridge was built in 1874.

Complete with benches, it gives an expansive view of the towering Lambton Canadian Pacific Railway Bridge north of it, which was built in 1874.

The railway bridge now serves a single line track for freight and passenger trains.

Wait long enough and you'll be able to watch and hear a freight train, or perhaps a passenger train, chugging along its single line track.

Being suspended over water, while looking across to another, much taller bridge, is sort of a nice reminder of the simple feats of human engineering if you needed one.

The Humber River Recreational Trail is a pedestrian and cyclist trail that runs along the river.

The east-west perspective also provides an ideal north-south vantage point of what used to be the Toronto Carrying Place, a large reason why the city as we know it exists today.

There are a number of bridges and footpaths along the Humber River Recreational Trail.

The centuries-old Indigenous trail followed the east bank of the Humber and was most recently used by the Wendat, Onondawahgah, and later, the Mississauga First Nations to travel between Lake Ontario and Lake Simcoe.

Later it was used by colonialists, from traders to priests, between 1615 and the early 1800s. It's along this route that Toronto has purposefully built many railways and hydro corridors.

North of the railway bridge, looking south toward the entrance of the pedestrian bridge.

Not much portaging happens along these shores these days — the Carrying Place hasn't been used for more than 200 years — but with a view like this, one can imagine why it was so popular.

Lambton Woods is a natural masterpiece in the works.

This 53-acre stretch of land has been undergoing maintenance for years, but even with its incomplete trails and the occasional appearance of city signs, these forests are some of the most beautiful natural landscapes the Carolinian Zone has to offer.

Running along the Humber River just south of James Gardens, Lambton Woods is best accessed via the Humber River Recreational Trail.

Steep valley slopes and forests of broadleaf trees such as maples and oaks make up this beautiful deciduous canopy.

Designated an Environmentally Significant Area by the City of Toronto, Lambton Woods has seen some major changes over the years in an attempt to preserve this piece of land on the river's west bank.

To tackle erosion, debris and a decaying boardwalk, log steps and several bridges have been removed, as has the gravel trail. In some cases, native plants have taken their place.

There are also several giant logs slated to be removed.
