Free events in Toronto: February 24 - March 2, 2014

Free events in TorontoFree events in Toronto this week range from tango lessons to film screenings, but there's a ton of options for music fans especially. This week might just get you set up for the summer (summertime!). Don't forget to pay your rent on Friday, and don't worry about fun. Fun will happen if you let it into your heart.

Here's how to have fun on a budget in Toronto this week.

Doc spotlight: Female representation in media @ Bloorcourt Screen Shot

Bloorcourt Screen Shot is a free monthly screening event, and this Monday they'll show Body Typed, a series of 3 short films by Jesse Epstein, Agency, a "documentary film by Meredith Wright that follows young Western women struggling to work as models in Osakas unforgiving fashion market," and host a Q&A with both directors. Monday, Feb 24, 8pm, Tallboys - Craft Beer House (838 Bloor Street West).

Gin City Miracles, Cat and the Queen and friends

Free folky, bluesy, soulful music at the Magpie. This show has Gin City Miracles, Cat and the Queen and more on the line up for a total of four bands for 0 dollars - what reality is this? Monday, Feb 24, 9pm, Magpie Taproom (831 Dundas St. West).

NXNE presents Army Girls, Fresh Snow, Michael Rault, Wish

Whoah this show is totally free, and apparently NXNE is going to make a huge announcement about their upcoming festival. I'm calling it and it's Kanye. Warning: you have to RSVP here to attend. Do it now or you might miss out. Tuesday, Feb 25, 8pm, The Garrison (1197 Dundas St W).

Atom & the Volumes, Dear Love - Nu Music Nite presented by Indie88

I don't know what's going on here but there's another indie rawk show, featuring Atom & the Volumes, Dear Love, and more, going down on Tuesday that's also free. Time to venue hop? Time to communicate better? Time to share the love. Tuesday, Feb 25, 9pm, Horseshoe Tavern (370 Queen Street W).

Argentine Tango Class for Beginners

If winter's had you sitting around in your long underwear side-eying your pretty shoes and summer duds, it's time to (slowly, carefully) get up and stretch your dying muscles. No partner? No money? No excuses - this Wednesday class at quirky Polish Combatant's Hall just requires that you show up. Warning - only the first class is free, so if you fall in love with the spirit of dance, I can't help you. Wednesday, Feb 26, 7pm, Polish Combatant's Hall (206 Beverley Street).

Free Screening of documentary "My Prairie Home"

Still fresh from Sundance, Chelsea McMullan's film My Prairie Home follows singer-songwriter Rae Spoon and traces the Canadian prairies in a queer and musical coming of age. Everyone who has ever been born needs to see this movie. I'm not joking! It's both important and unforgettable. Wednesday Feb 26, 8pm, Cinecyle (in the old coach house down the lane behind 129 Spadina Avenue).

HomeEc #25: Craft Beer Salon

Love beer? Relying on beer to keep you alive for the next month or so until spring hits? Here's a way to drink beer and make new friends. David Ort, writer of the The Canadian Craft Beer Cookbook, and Steve Riley (BetterBeer.com) will be there to chat and give you helpful #beerlife tips. Wednesday Feb 26, 8pm, Hi-Lo Bar (753 Queen St. E).

Queer Fear: Lost Boys

If you can't make it into My Prairie Home (it'll probably fill up fast), treat yourself to Lost Boys at Videofag. "Queer Fear is a screening series aimed at bringing the fiercest of horror's skeletons out of the closet." Wednesday Feb 26, 8pm, Videofag (187 Augusta Avenue).

The Four Seasons Mosaic: Documentary Screening

Classical music lovers with free afternoons will want to check out this documentary that includes a re-imagining of Antonio Vivaldi's The Four Seasons for the 21st Century, guided in part by composer Mychael Danna (Life of Pi). Thursday, Feb 27, 2pm, Elizabeth Beeton Auditorium, Toronto Reference Library (789 Yonge Street)

Crowded Kingdom by ANSER

Yeah most gallery things are free, but this one is special. On Thursday night Anser's Crowded Kingdom opens at Hashtag Gallery - you've likely seen ANSER's portraits around Toronto unless you're a major shoegazer. The graffiti artists' work has also made it into gallery settings from time to time, yet this will be the artists' first major exhibit in over six years. The opening runs Thursday Feb 27 from 7pm - 11:30pm. Hashtag Gallery (801 Dundas St W).

Mystery Party

Head to Weird Things
at Bathurst and Dupont to see gallery owner Jonny P's launch his "Mystery Party" art book while Phil Woollam launches "Variations." There will also be prints and editions from Colour Code Printing available. Thursday Feb 27, 7pm, Weird Things (998 Bathurst St).

The Julee Cruise Ships & Fiver

Twin Peaks tribute band The Julee Cruise Ships will be joined by special guests every Saturday in March at Handlebar. First up is FIVER! It's PWYC, so toss them whatever you can and enjoy the sweet sounds of David Lynch's scary, scary universe. Saturday March 1, 10pm, Handlebar (159 Augusta).

Nite Comfort #6

A second PWYC night at Handlebar takes place on Sunday, but this one's for dance music fans. Catch CHOBO, Von Pixel, DJ Mary Mack, and visuals by Douglas Godinho. Sunday, March 2, 8pm, Handlebar (159 Augusta).

2nd Annual ONYX Cinema Night at OCADU

A discussion between two artists, Charmaine Lurch and Audrey Hudson, will take place on the topic of Colored Frames, "a film about looking back at the last 50 yrs in African-American/Canadian Art." There will be vendors selling books, art prints, jewellery and more - plus free (free!) food and refreshments. Sunday, March 2, 6pm, Ontario College of Art and Design University (100 McCaul Street).

Clara Engel // The Morals // Ah! la lettre! // Amateur

Assuming you have some change left after paying rent and donating to artists wherever you can (you're so nice!), here's one more PWYC show, because Clara Engel, who we recently interviewed, is awesome. March 2, 8pm, Magpie Taproom (831 Dundas St. West).
