Restaurant openings in Toronto are just heating up as the weather starts to cool down. October brought with it a whole new crop of eateries devoted to comfort food, sustainable seafood, and a handful of new kitchens that embrace nose to tail dining.
Here are my picks for the top Toronto restaurants to open in October.
Fring's
The heavily hyped collaboration between Drake and Susur Lee opened to the public this month with a supper club vibe. The kitchen turns out plates of steak tartare, ricotta toast, and maple fried chicken.
Bar Hop Brewco
This multi-level beer bar and future microbrewery goes beyond your typical pub grub offering a selection of snacks, salads, sandwiches and shared entrees from chef Mark Cutrara (Cowbell). Look forward to plates of potato churros, glazed pork belly steam buns, and pig head nachos.
Tacos 101
This isn't the only taqueria to open in October, but it was easily the tastiest. The al pastor featuring shaved pork cooked on a vertical rotisserie (like gyros) is a must order.
Miku
High end sushi landed in Toronto by way of Vancouver this past month. Aburi (blowtorched sushi) is the house specialty, but you'll also find an ample selection of chilled seafood, cooked fish and an extensive list of sake.
Antler
Antler replaced This End Up on Dundas West and is serving up a menu of foraged foods and game meats. Here you'll find chestnut gnocchi, venison Jamaican patties, and a game burger.
Parcae
Newly opened inside the Templar Hotel where Monk Kitchen used to be, Chef Danny Hassell (formerly of Buca), teams up with newly relocated Montreal Chef Joseph Awad (Au Pied De Cochon and Sugar Shack) to serve up fried artichokes, horse carpaccio, duck ravioli and deep fried lamb brains.
PO Box 1192
An eclectic menu featuring burgers, beef short rib poutine, Thai chicken nachos, and butternut squash gnocchi await you at this new Leslieville snack bar which took over the address of Rock Lobster.
Cactus Club Cafe
Another mega chain from the west coast opened its first Toronto location this month. Situated over three floors in First Canadian Place, Cactus Club is a destination for burgers and BBQ duck club sandwiches as much as it is for steaks and premium seafood.
Impact Kitchen
This massive new all day destination offers breakfast bowls and oatmeal in the a.m., salads and power bowls at lunch, and bison meatballs and flank steaks at dinner.
Blaze Pizza
In a month filled with more than a few high end openings, this American pizza joint stands out for being especially wallet friendly. Endorsed by NBA sensation LeBron James, the fast casual concept operates similar to Chipotle. Diners run down an assembly line stocked with 40 different toppings to create a personalized pie all for the flat fee of $10.45.
