Toronto looks great on Instagram. From rooftop photography to stunning shots of urban green spaces, our city photographs well. But, we wouldn't get to see our city in this flattering light without the numerous photographers who regularly post their work online.
Enter Global Meet, a movement founded by Pittsburgh-based Adam King (behind the account A Game of Tones) that brings together Instagram photographers in cities around the world. The first "meet" happened on July 26 and yesterday brought its second iteration. The event unfolded in numerous urban centres including New York, Sydney, Jakarta, Austin, Detroit and of course Toronto.
Local photographer Sanjay Chauhan, who's also behind the account @imagesofcanada, helped organize the Toronto event alongside fellow Instagrammers such as Eric Mark Do who curates @way2ill_ , among other accounts.
Instagram-based hosts included @imagesoftoronto (which Chauhan founded), @InstaMagazine_ , @6ixWalks and @CelebrateToronto. "The whole purpose is to bring the community together, to connect with photographers and to encourage their work," says Chauhan.
Hashtag Paid was a sponsor so the meet-up started at its Richmond and Spadina headquarters. Afterwards, the 150 attendees went on a photowalk that brought them to the rooftop of the Thompson Hotel, another sponsor. "The weather was beautiful and people were able to take really good pictures," says Chauhan of yesterday's event.
It all concluded with an after party at Apartment 200, which gave participants a chance to unwind and talk. After all, says Chauhan, it was all about connecting photographers in real life to create a stronger Instagram community in Toronto.
Yesterday was the second ever Global Meet. As Eric Mark Do notes, Toronto has been with the movement since the beginning. For the summer event, he helped bring around 250 Instagrammers on a photowalk from Yorkville to the waterfront. Now, he wants Global Meet 3 to be even bigger.
