Halifax donair is just one of the many regional variations on the shaved meat packed pita wrap that you'll find in Toronto. Differentiating itself from other types of shawarma, this sandwich relies on a unique sauce: a garlic-laced condensed milk concoction that gets slathered over meat and veggies. For some it's an acquired taste, while others will say it's the holy grail of drunk food.
Here are my picks for the top Halifax donair in Toronto.
The Thirsty Duck
This east-side public house makes their donair ($12) with spiced ground beef that is baked then shaved thin and crisped up before being nestled into Lebanese flatbread. It comes dressed with the signature sweet-and-creamy garlic sauce and is finished with a medley of parsley, tomato and onions.
The Fuzz Box
The takeout counter on The Danforth has built its business on this Haligonian specialty ($6-$10). Find seasoned beef shaved off a gyro spit then piled into a Greek-style pita (or a bun if you prefer) with the essentials: chopped onions, tomatoes and garlicky cream sauce. Upgrade options include cheddar, mozzarella and bacon. There's also a poutine version.
College Falafel
Get your donair fix at this falafel shop on Ossington at College, where the East Coast Donair ($8) can be had on a choice of white or whole wheat pita packed with beef shawarma, sweet sauce and a choice of fresh toppings.
Hopgood's Foodliner
The East Coast-inspired restaurant on Roncesvalles serves up puffy pitas loaded with shaved meat, chopped onions, tomatoes and sweet garlic sauce. Get two per order for $14.
Hey Meatball (Leslieville)
The Eastcoaster Sandwich ($13) at the Leslieville branch of this meatball purveyor is a donair-esque sandwich featuring spiced beef meatloaf topped with pickled veggies, lettuce, onions and donair sauce on a soft ciabatta bun.
Rock Lobster
The seafood house boasts two Toronto locations where you'll find classic beef donairs ($10) on the menu (there's both surf and turf here). Built on Lebanese pita, the wrap features crispy sliced beef paired with diced onions, tomatoes and sweet donair sauce.
The Battered Fish
The chain of fish and chip shops is originally from the East Coast and while the menu doesn't bill a proper donair, there's a poutine version that'll satisfy the same craving. This boxed meal starts with a base of fries loaded with gravy and cheese curds, and to that they pile on shaved donair meat and the customary fixin's.
