CN Tower on new design for the Loonie

CN Tower Loonie coinToronto's most iconic building will now be featured on what is arguably the country's most recognizable currency: the one dollar coin. The Royal Canadian Mint has unveiled the designs for its new set of circulation coins in celebration of Canada's 150th anniversary, which features a major shout-out to our city's skyline.

The mint launched a competition last year for the a new set of coin designs organized around a series of themes. The one dollar coin is a tribute to "Our Achievements" and is titled "Connecting a Nation." Along with the CN Tower, artist Wesley Klassen included the Lion's Gate Bridge, Chateau Frontenac, a grain elevator and lighthouse, as well as other symbols of Canada's railways.

There are also new designs for the nickel, dime, quarter, and two dollar coin that were voted on as part of the process. The Toonie is also quite pretty it its depiction of the Northern Lights. All of the coins will enter circulation in spring of 2017.
