Cheap winter getaways from Toronto are a great way to take in the beauty of snow-covered Ontario without breaking the bank. In general, cold weather escapes are more expensive than those in the summer because it's not possible to just pitch a tent anywhere. Fortunately, there are some affordable options for those looking to ditch the city for a little winter R&R.
Here are five cheap weekend getaways from Toronto this winter.
Rent a yurt!
You might not be able to camp in the middle of winter, but this is the closest thing, and in some ways even more fun. A number of Ontario Parks offer yurt rentals throughout starting in December, including MacGregor Point, Alongonquin, Killarney, Silent Lake, and the Pinery (to name only a few). Yurts tend to run $86 a night plus fees and taxes.
Stay at a B&B in Fergus
There are few small towns more quaint than Fergus, though its neighbour Elora would give it a run for its money. The good thing for you is that when you visit one, you can also visit the other, as they are only a five minute drive apart. I'd stay in Fergus for the better pub options and the wonderfully affordable St. George B&B. A room and breakfast starts at $75 a night.
Unwind in Oshweken at The Bear's Inn
If what you really need is to get a way from it all for a few days, head to The Bear's Inn, a lovely little hotel in Oshweken on the Six Nations of the Grand River First Nation reserve near Brantford. It's an excellent jump off point for exploring the snow-covered countryside around the Grand River, but also a wonderfully relaxing place that sheds light on Six Nations history and culture. Rooms start at $70 a night.
Pamper yourself at Benmiller Inn & Spa in Goderich
A trip to the spa in the country sounds like the perfect way to spend a restorative winter weekend, but unfortunately many of them are far too expensive to consider. The Benmiller Inn & Spa in Goderich is, however, reasonably priced. They have a variety of packages and specials that keep the accomodation prices within reach and include breakfast and dinner options. Two day packages start at $409 for a couple.
Cozy up at The Breakers in Cobourg
One of the best cheap summer getaways is also a great bet in the winter thanks to cozy, fireplace-equipped rooms, gorgeous lakeside scenery, and all the things to do around Cobourg and Port Hope. Located right on Lake Ontario, The Breakers is a picturesque motel resort in Cobourg that's also close to the delights of the Northumberland Forest, where you can cross country ski and snowshoe to your heart's content. Rooms start at $110 a night.
