Toronto condo buildings can now ban Airbnb rentals

Have you ever rented out your apartment, condo or house using Airbnb? Plenty of those visiting Toronto use Airbnb to find cheap (and not so cheap) places to stay.

But according to a ruling out of an Ottawa courtroom, condominium corporations can ban owners from renting out their suites on sharing sites such as Airbnb, reports the Financial Post.

The Post writes that in a 14 page ruling, Ontario Superior Court Justice Justice Robert Beaudoin said that the owners of an Ottawa condo violated their condo board's "single family use" provision by renting out their unit to short-stay guests via website such as Airbnb and Expedia.

As the Post notes, this ruling could have implications both in Ontario as well as in other provinces.

Earlier this month, Airbnb inked deals in London and Amsterdam to limit the number of nights owners could rent out their places for. Toronto has considered regulating Airbnb, but has yet to put formal rules in place.
