In Toronto, a good breakfast sandwich is the next best thing to brunch. Better than a bowl of cereal, these handheld creations pack in eggs, bacon, cheese and carbs for a quick and complete meal that can be eaten on-the-go.
Here are my picks for the top breakfast sandwiches in Toronto by neighbourhood.
BEACHES
Breakfast sandwiches on wood-fired bagels are the specialty at Bagels on Fire. There's about 10 different options all appropriate for the a.m. including the classic egg and cheddar sandwich with a choice of bacon or ham ($4.50).
BLOORDALE
The McHaven ($6) at North Haven has everything you could ask for in a breakfast sandwich. Built on an English muffin or croissant (depending on daily availability), it's topped with bacon, egg, cheddar, goat cheese and pico de gallo.
BLOOR WEST VILLAGE
The sausage bagel ($4.95) is a fave at Baka Gallery Cafe. This baby comes topped with a fried egg, fennel pork sausage, roasted tomato and Havarti cheese.
CABBAGETOWN
The Epicure Shop isn't just a fine foods store, but also the makers of might fine breakfast sandwiches like The Popeye ($3.49) featuring farm fresh eggs, spinach and melted havarti on a bagel, ciabatta bun or English muffin, and The King ($5) loaded with peameal bacon, cheddar and roasted peppers.
CORKTOWN
The breakfast butty ($9.75) at Morning Glory is just one of several breakfasts on a bun on the menu at this Corktown cafe. It's got a classic combination of bacon and scrambled eggs and is finished with sliced tomato, homemade ketchup and aioli.
DANFORTH
Thick slabs of peameal with eggs and cheese are nestled into fresh, house-baked buns at Dough Bakeshop.
DUNDAS WEST
At The Federal the Gold Standard Sandwich ($10) features a scrambled egg, with cheddar, bacon or kale, pickles, hot sauce and aioli on an English muffin.
FINANCIAL DISTRICT
Brick Street Bakery is a go-to for a.m. standards like BLTs or sliced hard-boiled eggs with bacon, lettuce and tomato on fresh-baked bread ($5.65).
THE JUNCTION
Locomotive is an ideal morning destination to get your coffee fix along with fried egg sandwiches ($6.79 to $7.79). Four options are available featuring a choice of bacon, ham, roasted mushrooms or smoked salmon.
KENSINGTON MARKET
The breakfast sandwich ($9) at Fika Cafe starts with an English muffin topped with ham, cheese and egg dressed in Sriracha mayo.
KING WEST
The cafe at Portland Variety does a pretty awesome grab and go breakfast sandwich featuring eggs and bacon with aged cheddar on a croissant for $7.89.
LESLIEVILLE
Is it any surprise that a takeout shop devoted to bacon rules mornings on the east side? Rashers is home to a multitude of morning sandwiches including the Hogtown Sandwich ($7.50) featuring peameal bacon on a bun with optional fried egg (+$1) and cheddar cheese (+$1)
LITTLE INDIA
At Lazy Daisy's Cafe get the egg 'n cheese sandwich ($7.25) on a homestyle biscuit with free-range eggs, cheddar and Mennonite smoked bacon. Vegetarians can partake too with a version featuring egg, cheese, tomato and avocado.
LITTLE ITALY
The breakfast pocket ($9.25) is the thing to get at Aunties & Uncles. It's a massive slab of focaccia layered with scrambled eggs and peameal bacon, slapped with a slice of cheddar and finished with tomato caramelized onions, dijon and aioli. A choice of potatoes or salad is included on the side.
MOUNT PLEASANT
Bread & Butter is a homey family style restaurant where BLTs and fried egg sandwiches are your best handheld bet in the a.m. These aren't fancy sandwiches, but for $3.99, they'll hit the spot just fine.
NORTH YORK
What A Bagel on Dufferin south of Steeles is an excellent source for cream cheese and lox sandwiches ($10.49) assembled to order. From the kitchen, order scrambled eggs with cheddar and turkey bacon for about $8.
OSSINGTON
Crafted by Te Aro typically offers two breakfast options on milk buns each morning. The back bacon sandwich ($9) is paired with tomato jam, cheddar and topped with a poached egg, while the veggie version ($8.50) boasts a poached egg with spinach, goat cheese and garlic hollandaise.
QUEEN WEST
For a great variety of breakfast sandwiches, Le Gourmand is your friend. Find ham and brie on flaky croissants, bacon, egg and cheddar sandwiched between buttermilk biscuits, and tomato, avocado and aged cheddar on grain bread.
RIVERSIDE
Grab a coffee and an ever popular breakfast bagel ($4) at The Cannonball on Queen East. The base of this sandwich is egg, cheese, and tomato, which can be customized with a choice of about a half dozen different types of cheese and additional toppings like onions or sauteed mushrooms.
RONCESVALLES VILLAGE
Get the St. Joe's Special (from $5.63) at Seventh Sister Bakery to enjoy a fully loaded bagel with guacamole, red onion, olives, tomato, cucumber, spinach, sprouts and cheese topped up with a couple poached eggs and slices of bacon.
SCARBOROUGH
Found at St. Clair and Victoria Park, The Ginger Man is a hidden gem where popular picks include greasy spoon staples like BLTs and Western sandwiches on a choice of toast for $5.75.
ST. CLAIR WEST
Emma's Country Kitchen is home to The Breakwich ($6.50) built on a buttermilk biscuit and loaded with an over easy egg, a choice of cheddar or Swiss, and selection of breakfast meats like house cured bacon or sage onion sausage patty.
ST. LAWRENCE MARKET
The OG of breakfast sandwiches in Hogtown can be found at Carousel Bakery. The peameal bacon here is thick and comes loaded on a country bun with optional cheese or fried eggs (from $4.85).
WEST QUEEN WEST
Sud Forno is an Italian bakery from the folks behind Terroni, where glass pastry cases are stocked each morning with a selection of sandwiches including the Cornetto con Frittata ($5.50) loaded with egg, asparagus and pecorino frittata.
YONGE & ST. CLAIR
Breakfast sandwiches built on big puffy bagels are the specialty at Kiva's Bagel Bar. Fried egg sandwiches ($9) are available, but better still is the Tel-Aviv Meets Tokyo ($14), an upgrade on the usual cream cheese and lox with added wasabi spread.
