Summer in Toronto was the final straw for a number of well known restaurants. Many on this list were long-established fixtures in Toronto's dining landscape, while others were short-lived but well-loved by local diners. Regardless, they'll be missed.
Here are the most high profile restaurant closures of summer 2016.
Caffe Brasiliano
Rumour has it Craig Harding of Campagnolo is taking it over this now-closed Dundas West icon. The windows have been papered up since June.
Joy Bistro
This Leslieville bistro closed in June and has already reopened as Barrio, a casual Mexican joint from Ted Koutsogiannopoulos, the original owner of Joy Bistro who also owns McGugan's, Aprile Bambina Cucina and the Loaded Pierogi.
Porter House
A big loss for meatless eaters in Toronto, this all-vegan public house, known for its Brit-style comfort food, closed its doors before the end of June.
Jim's Restaurant
This old school diner in Leslieville shut down this summer to make room for more condos.
Lolita's Lust
After two decades on the Danforth, this Mediterranean restaurant closed as owner Sam Scanga turned his attention to his Leslieville restaurant, Braised.
Me & Mine
This cozy College Street brunch spot closed in July. Laylow, a new craft beer bar, is slated to take its place in the coming weeks.
Rock Lobster
Rock Lobster's Queen West location closed in early July and has already been converted into The Dime, a new collaboration from The Bovine Sex Club and the El Furniture Warehouse restaurant group.
Sushi Queen
The long-standing sushi bar on Queen Street West closed in July. The restaurant was a favourite for its pink dragon rolls and avocado boats.
The Cure
This Dundas West eatery, formerly known as The Hogtown Cure, was revamped earlier this year before calling it quits for good in July.
Cheesewerks
"After 5-gouda years we've made the very hard decision to close our operations," read the final farewell on Cheesewerk's website when it announced its closure. While gourmet grilled cheese restaurants may not be as plentiful as they once were in Toronto, there are still plenty of places serving excellent takes on this classic sandwich.
Fat City Blues
The N'awlins blues bar quietly closed its doors this summer and is the latest causality of this high turnover address at the northeast corner of College and Delaware. Huntsman Tavern, Red Fish and Mitzi's before that all met the same fate.
The Saint
This tavern on Ossington closed in August as the King Street Food Company prepares to reopen as La Banane, a new restaurant helmed by chef Brandon Olsen.
The Whippoorwill
Bloordale's Whippoorwill closed in August and will soon be replaced by Dolly's, a new Fillipino-mojito bar from Dave Sidhu of Playa Cabana.
Lucky Red
The Banh Mi Boys spin off in Chinatown called it quits in August.
Furlough
This short-lived European bistro and cocktail bar from the folks behind BarChef couldn't break the curse on this West Queen West address that was previously home to Ursa.
Shala-mar
This Indian restaurant on Roncesvalles closed after spending more than 25 years as a neighbourhood staple. Signs in the window are currently advertising a cider house that'll likely open soon in its place.
Linwood Essentials
This acclaimed cocktail bar at Queen Street West and Shaw joined the deadpool in August after a two year run.
