How gory is too gory? Apparently Julia Ducournau's Raw, which had its international premiere on Monday as part TIFF's Midnight Madness program, was so disturbing, a couple of moviegoers passed out at the late-night screening. Some patrons even spotted an ambulance sitting outside of the Ryerson Theatre.
The entire incident, however, was staged, reports Jezebel after quoting Ryan Werner, one of the people responsible for marketing Raw.
Screen Rant was also skeptical, writing, "Toronto Paramedic Services could not find any record of an ambulance being called out to Ryerson Theatre (where the screening took place) at the time when the incident is said to have occurred."
Marketing ploys aside, Raw is getting great reviews and is supposed to be pretty visceral too. At a Midnight Madness screening on Saturday night, programmer Colin Geddes said it actually made him wince.
Writer-director Ducournau's first feature film follows a vegetarian veterinary student who develops a taste for human flesh after participating in a hazing ritual.
What do you think of the marketing stunt? Weigh in via the comments.
