This week in theatre rounds up the most noteworthy live theatre playing right now in Toronto. It includes just-opened shows as well as productions that are about to close.
Entertaining Mr. Sloane / Soulpepper - Young Centre / 8:00pm / $32-$68
Joe Orton's first play, Entertaining Mr. Sloane, established the young provocateur as a powerful, compelling new voice when it first premiered in 1964. He went on to establish a lasting collection of black comedies before his untimely murder three years later. Buddies Artistic Director Brendan Healy directs the play, in which a mysterious boarder with a dark past charms his hosts for a continued stay.
Oh My Irma / Theatre Passe Muraille / 7:30pm/2:00pm / $15-$20
Haley McGee's Oh My Irma has had quite the ride after its professional debut at Theatre Passe Muraille in 2011. The incredibly compelling one woman show has made quite an impression at festivals throughout the world (New York, Amsterdam, Mongolia, Kosovo). Appearing covered in bruises and blood, a young woman attempts to unravel a crime and ends up committing one herself. It returns for a limited three show run.
The Taming of the Shrew / Shakespeare in High Park / 8:00pm / PWYC
Canadian Stage goes repertoire this summer with two of the Bard's plays, one comedy and one tragedy, presented in High Park. This week, The Taming of the Shrew, Shakespeare's clash of the mighty genders, opens under the stars. York-Canadian Stage MFA Directing student Ted Witzel is at the helm, with performances by Kevin MacDonald as Petruchio and Sophie Goulet as Kate.
Anything Goes / Princess of Wales / 8:00pm/2:00pm / $35-$100+
Cole Porter's classic musical was given new sea legs by the Roundabout Theatre Company in 2011. Anything Goes went on to receive the Drama Desk Award and Tony Award for Best Revival and Best Choreography. On a trip from New York to London aboard the S.S. America, the ship's travelers are in for high-seas antics as Billy Crocker tries to win the affections of Hope Harcourt.
The Misanthrope / Guild Inn Gardens / 7:30pm/2:00pm / $25
Now in its third season, the Guild Festival Theatre presents a play each summer in the Scarborough Bluffs. The Guild Inn, which is surrounded by sprawling gardens and old architectural details, serves as the idyllic setting. This year, the company presents The Misanthrope, Moliere's clever, refined, comedy about the hypocrisy of French aristocracy.
