This Week in Music: Indie88 bulks up, Protest the Hero at Sound Academy, Future Islands hit Drake Hotel

Future IslandsThis Week in Music rounds up the latest news, releases and concerts coming to Toronto.

IN THE NEWS

Indie88 receives long-awaited (and needed) signal boost

Not everyone will agree, but I think Indie88 has been a breath of fresh air officially hit the airwaves for the radio scene in Toronto. However, one justifiable complaint against the station has been its somewhat weak signal — listeners throughout the GTA who aren't right in the heart of Toronto have had to deal with static and consistent feedback ever since the station launched. But as of last Friday, the CRTC has officially approved Indie88's application for a signal increase. While the technical aspects will take a few weeks to be ironed out this is great news for Toronto indie fans. Head on over to the CRTC's official site to read the full decision.

THIS WEEK'S HOT TICKETS

SATURDAY NOVEMBER 9 / PROTEST THE HERO / SOUND ACADEMY / 11 POLSON / $29.49 / 19+

Fresh off last week's release of their fourth album Volition, local prog-rockers Protest the Hero will play a show at the Sound Academy on Saturday. Having already listened to Volition, I can tell you that this is a band that has continued to evolve and grow over the years. And it's a unique release in that it was entirely crowd-sourced through Indiegogo — clearly, this is a band that has mucho love from their fans.

SUNDAY NOVEMBER 10 / FUTURE ISLANDS / THE DRAKE HOTEL / 1150 QUEEN W / $15.50 / 19+

Back in January a good friend of mine showed me the music video for Future Islands' magnificent tune "Give Us The Wind." In a very short time the song became an all-time favourite, and after 10 long months I'm finally getting the opportunity to see the band in all its glory. If you're not familiar with the synth-pop outfit, I highly urge you to check them out (listen to the awesomeness above if you want a good place to start). This is definitely a must-see show of the week.
