FUNDRAISER | Stache Bash!
Calling all Mo' Bros! Bar Italia is the place to be tonight to get your staches started. In case the extreme chill in the air didn't remind you, November has indeed arrived, and this is that special month where many males in various locations across the globe grow their mustaches to raise awareness of prostate cancer and other male health issues, cancer related and otherwise. There will be some great drinks, edibles, and entertainment at tonight's event, as well as raffles — proceeds from which will go towards fighting cancer. Bar Italia (582 College Street) 8PM $10.
MUSIC | Yamantaka // Sonic Titan
Experimental music project Yamantaka // Sonic Titan hits The Garrison tonight. Some view what they do as performance art and some see them as a no wave influenced underground band. Quite likely, both views are correct! Their first album, YT//ST was longlisted for the 2012 Polaris Music prize, and their latest is called UZU. Opening the show tonight is Montreal-based singer/songwriter, Jef Barbara. The Garrison (1197 Dundas Street West) 8PM $10.50.
BOOKS & LIT | Festival Man: Sex, Drink and Accordions
Tonight, This Is Not A Reading Series (TINARS) presents a party in celebration of Festival Man, a novel by singer/songwriter Geoff Berner. Berner has written a work of fiction about a world he knows all too well in "real life:" the music business, and specifically, the Western Canada's folk festival circuit. Reviews have been favourable, and describe the book as a remarkable "slice of life" from this corner of the music business. Tonight's event will find another well-known Canadian musician and writer, Dave Bidini participating along with a number of other local musical luminaries playing "the soundtrack of Festival Man", including Rae Spoon, Corb Lund, Carolyn Mark, and others. COMEDY | Queer As F%*k
Tonight, Toronto's only LGBTQ comedy night goes down once again at The Steady, and this will be an ongoing regular addition to the city's comedy landscape, happening every two weeks at this venue. Catherine McCormick will be the regular host, and putting together a fresh lineup of happening comics each time. Tonight's lineup includes: Daniela Saioni, Robert Keller, Paul Hutcheson, Patrick Cadegan, Keelan Miller, Zabrina Chevannes, and others. There is an "open mic" element to this comedy night, as well, so do expect the unexpected. The Steady (1051 Bloor Street West) 9:30PM PWYC.
FILM | 8th Annual Pomegranate Film Festival
The Pomegranate film fest collects Armenian inspired films at Hamazkayin Theatre and The Regent Theatre — I'm hazarding a guess that the name of the fest is at least in part a tribute to Armenian film The Color of Pomegranates, which is awesome — kicks off tonight, featuring eighteen Canadian premieres and four world premieres. Three mid length films will screen tonight at Hamazkayin Theatre for Pom Prelude: Hamshen Nation, Was Casanova Armenian?, and My Armenian Neighbourhood. The full schedule is here. FILM | Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival
The Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival is on now in Toronto. The festival, a non-profit, annual event, is the largest of its kind in Canada, and was founded in 1997, showcasing the best of modern cinema from South Asia and its diaspora. This evening's opening gala centers on Bombay Talkies, and celebrates a century of Indian motion pictures and the great minds behind them, with four short films being shown. An after party at Empire Lounge in Yorkville closes this first evening out with a bang. Read our must-see film picks here. The Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival runs until November 16th. MUSIC | Red Bull Thre3style - World's Biggest DJ Competition
The Red Bull Thre3style World Final DJ Championship began in 2007, and brings some of the world's best DJs together, and puts them head-to-head, and judged not only on their technical skills and musical taste, but their ability to move a crowd on the dancefloor. 21 uber-talented DJs from various global locales are now competing here in Toronto, jumping venues by the day until the final battle Saturday at Kool Haus.
