The cocktail competition is alive and well in Toronto. The local iteration of the longstanding Made with Love battle is set to take place on March 30th at the Liberty Grand, but there's also a new kid on the block. Organized by upstart distillery Dillon's, the Cocktail Cup will run as a series of head-to-head elimination challenges between the 10 finalists, the first of which takes place tomorrow night at Food & Liquor.
Most cocktail competitions pit a number of bartenders against one another at a given time, so this format should allow for greater focus on the participants and the skill that they employ in crafting their drinks. The series is also designed to showcase Toronto bars that are known for putting the effort in when it comes to cocktails, so drawing the proceedings out over the course of year should serve to highlight the overall state of cocktail culture in the city.
Some of the participating restaurants and bars include Churchill, Valdez, Home of the Brave, Cold Tea, Parts & Labour, and Hopgood's Foodliner. Information about the finalists in competition for the Cocktail Cup can be found here. The first event will pit Jesse Borg (Home of the Brave) against Erin Petty (El Caballito). Tickets are $30, which include the fruits of the bartenders' labour.
