Iconic Yonge St. bookstore cooked by condo project

Toronto Cookbook StoreAfter 30 years at the corner of Yonge and Yorkville, the Cookbook Store is preparing to move on account of condo pressure. Quill & Quire reports that the building that houses the iconic Toronto bookstore and cooking studio has been sold to developers, leaving the shop's ownership to mull new locations. According to store manager Alison Fryer and owner Josh Josephson the plan is to take the business elsewhere, and that there are already "a number of options to relocate the store."

Details, however, remain scarce.

It's a fairly typical Toronto story, and one that doesn't always have a happy ending (see the fate of Pages Books). The area around the store has witnessed intense development over the last few years, so news of the building's sale comes as little surprise. That said, the store in question is one of the city's best speciality shops and boasts a passionate customer-base who will likely miss the familiar environs of the current location. Management promises to provide an update on its plans when possible.
