THEATRE | Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre -Ghost Tour
Tonight, a different take on the Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre's usual public tour — the "ghost" edition! This is a National Historic Site, and where's there's history, there are ghosts. This theatre complex was built in 1913, and is the last surviving "double-decker" or "stacked" theatre complex in the world. The structure emerged in the time of vaudeville, and still houses the world's largest collection of vaudeville scenery. On this tour you will learn about the different ghosts that have been said to inhabit the theatre, as well as plenty about its long and rich history. COMEDY | Cream of Comedy
Hilarity ensues tonight at Second City, as five strong talents who emerged with distinction from the recent Fresh Meat showcase return head-to-head in what will be the ultimate competition: the Cream Of Comedy 2013. For the 18th year running, The Tim Sims Encouragement Fund will lend support to help launch the careers of young comics and performers. Brandon Ash Mohammed, Diana Bailey, Franco Nguyen, Nigel Grinstead, and The Weaker Vessels will battle it out in a friendly fashion for the Tim Sims Encouragement Award, and for a cheque for five-thousand dollars. MUSIC | KMFDM @ The Phoenix
Pioneers of the Industrial genre, KMFDM hit the Phoenix tonight. This German groundbreaking group, formed in the mid-eigthies, was formed on a whim as a piece of "performance art" by Sascha Konietzko and Udo Sturm. Their first US appearances found them touring with Ministry, and the group soon relocated to find a home in Chicago's industrial music scene. The band's latest release is Kunst which came out in February, and features guests including William Wilson of Legion Within. Chant (Austin, TX), opens the show tonight. BOOKS & LIT | Governor General's Literary Awards Finalists
Tonight, as part of the ongoing International Festival Of Authors, a special event happens at the Fleck Dance Theatre, celebrating the nominees for the Governor General's Literary Award for Fiction in English. Tonight Elizabeth Hay hosts a talented assortment of authors, including Kenneth Bonert; Rogers Writers' Trust Fiction Prize winner, Joseph Boyden; Amazon.ca First Novel Award winner, Eleanor Catton; previous Governor General's Award finalist Colin McAdam, and W.H. Smith/Nooks in Canada First Novel Award winner, Shyam Selvadurai. Fleck Dance Theatre (207 Queens Quay West) $25 ($20 members)
FOOD | Justeat.ca Campus Championship
The Justeat.ca Campus Championship takes place tonight at the Drake Hotel. This competitive eating challenge will award $5,000 (+$20K in prizes for the winner's campus) to the student who can consume the most pizza squares in three minutes. Better start eatin', kid.
