Pod Hotel set to offer Toronto a chance to power nap

Pod Hotel TorontoRejoice weary office worker, Toronto is about to get a pop-up Pod Hotel designed to provide 20 minutes of midday nap time. Having already made brief stops in Ottawa and Montreal, the temporary sleep sanctuary is scheduled to set up outside the Royal Blank Plaza (200 Bay Street) between October 21st and 27th. Those interested in catching some zzzzzs can book a 20 minute slot via the hotel's Facebook page (see previous link), which as of writing this, shows about 50 per cent availability left throughout its weeklong stay in our fair city. Apparently a few walk-in spots will also be reserved for curious onlookers, or just those who can prove they have the most zombie-like eyes.

The whole thing is a clever marketing ploy by Breathe Right — you know, the company that makes those nasal strips pro athletes seem so fond of — under the guise that extra sleep fosters increased productivity. Whatever. In general I like the idea if only because a short nap often feels like an exercise in survival rather than anything as lofty as increased productivity. That said, it's not difficult to ring off some of the obvious reservations that people will have with snoozing in a multi-use pod. Forgetting the obvious claustrophobic element, with appointments stacked tightly together, there's precious little time to clean these plods between nap sessions. I probably don't need to expand on why that might be unsavoury.

What do you think? Would you take a power nap at the Pod Hotel?
