This week in theatre rounds up the most noteworthy live theatre playing right now in Toronto. It includes just-opened shows as well as productions that are about to close.
Birth of Frankenstein / St. Luke's United Church / 8:00pm / $20-$30
Litmus Theatre has a great track-record of staging small-scale, sight-specific shows in unexpected spaces. But the ideas are anything but small — their Matchbox Macbeth staged in a shed was a huge hit. In Birth of Frankenstein, 40 audience members help the performers raise the ghost of Mary Shelley and share in the personal journey which led to the writing of one of the most important monster stories in all of literature.
The Double / Tarragon Theatre / 8:00pm/2:30pm / $21-$53
Chances are you missed this stellar production from Adam Paolozza and TheatreRUN the first time around. Tarragon Theatre has wisely brought The Double to their stages for a longer run this Fall. Paolozza is joined by Arif Mirabdolbaghi and Viktor Lukawski in this stage adaptation of the Fyodor Dostoyevsky novella, which features a memorable double bass that narrates the highly entertaining physical comedy.
Savage in Limbo / The Downstage / 8:00pm / $20
The clever tag line for Savage in Limbo is "A virgin, a failed nun and an over-ripe Italian girl walk into a bar..." Given that the playwright is the thought-provoking John Patrick Shanley (Danny and the Deep Blue Sea, Doubt: A Parable), expect that the play delves deeper into the story of these young New Yorkers than the old "walks into a bar joke" would suggest. It features Diana Bentley, Melissa D'Agostino, Nick Abraham, Caitlin Driscoll, and Tim Walker with direction from Sarah Kitz.
Halloween 360 Screening / Various Times / Undisclosed Location / $40-$60
Following their recent screening of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest hosted at the Christie Mansion, 360 Screenings presents an immersive Halloween experience. Now a firm fixture on the theatre calendar, 360 screenings releases the location of their venue 24 hours prior to the event. Upon arrival, audience members participate in interactive installations inspired by the film that deepen their experience of the subsequent screening.
Sucker / Storefront Theatre / 8:00pm/2:00pm / $15-$20
The themes of playwright Kat Sandler's work often have dark undertones so it's fitting that she's written a play that explores Halloween motifs. Sucker narrows in on a small town that has been touched by tragedy. The various characters that inhabit this world — an atheist with aspirations of becoming a rabbi, his sister who believes herself to be a vampire, and their tenant who's harbouring a sin — respond in their own way to the unfortunate events.
