Radar: Wilderness Of Manitoba, Storybook Confidential, Euphonia, and Chromascape

Wildnerness ManitboaToronto events on September 16th, 2013

MUSIC | Wilderness Of Manitoba

Folky five-piece, The Wilderness Of Manitoba, play a lunch hour concert today at Yonge-Dundas Square. With a sound that seems to be part of the near-ubiquitous "indie folk" genre, this TO-based band's most recent release, Island of Echoes has been very well received both here and abroad. WOM has done some far-reaching touring, and has evolved over the course of three albums, from relishing the coziness of home recording, to going out and tracking in large format recording studios. This afternoon's performance, part of Yonge-Dundas Square's "Lunchtime Live" series, will be a perfect way to chill during your lunch hour.

Yonge-Dundas Square (1 Dundas Street East) 12:30PM

BOOKS & LIT | Storybook Confidential - A Big Benefit for Small Print TO

A special fundraiser for Small Print Toronto happens tonight at The Gladstone Hotel. Small Print Toronto is a local non-profit organization that puts together literary events that engage children all over the GTA. "Storybook Confidential" will bring together TO's literary community, along with visual artists and musicians to make an awesome event for a great cause. Tonight's literary guests: Kyle Buckley, Liz Worth, Jessica Westhead, and others will read some of their unpublished childhood efforts. Musical guests include Don Kerr and several TO illustrators will be on hand to offer body art, as well as improvising illustrations to fiction being composed on the spot by the many writers on hand. This promises to be a very happening shindig.

Gladstone Hotel (1214 Queen St West) 7:30PM PWYC

MUSIC | Euphonia at Lula Lounge

While most orchestras are launching a "subscription series" in an auditorium or concert hall somewhere in the city, Euphonia invites you out once again for an evening of "classical" music in a comfortable setting: Lula Lounge. Yes, the popularity of Euphonia's regular TO appearances is the most convincing evidence that this type of music goes fabulously with drinks and food, something the concert hall atmosphere precludes by its very nature. Tonight's program includes Mendelssohn's String Symphony #8, Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante, and Haydn's Symphony #83, La Poule.

Lula Lounge (1585 Dundas Street West) 8PM PWYC ($10 suggested)

ART | The Pilot Presents "CHROMASCAPE" A solo exhibition by Beck Pura

The combination of jazz and visual art is one that goes way back. The association was firmly established in the Beat era, where the work of artists like Jackson Pollock (whose painting, The White Light was used on the album cover of Ornette Coleman's Free Jazz) was seen as representative of the music's freedom and expressive nature. Although it is indeed less and less common to hear of this pairing these days, tonight one of TO's premier jazz venues, The Pilot will host an exhibition of work by Toronto artist Beck Pura. Pura's work involves abstraction, but one that exists on landscapes of varying proportions and intense colour. Tonight's launch of Pura's Chromascape will also involve some musical performances.

The Pilot (22 Cumberland Street) 6:30PM
