House of the week: 9 Peyton Lane

If this house was a person, it would be like Keanu Reeves. Laid back, cool and a little badass. 9 peyton lane torontoThis property is sort of like two homes in one. There's the main house, which has 3,000 square feet of living space, and then there's an additional 1,000-square-foot studio space.

9 peyton lane torontoThe main home looks like the hard-loft condo of my dreams, but the good news is that it's not a condo! There's loads of character with the exposed beams, exposed bricks, polished concrete floors and other factory-like features.

9 peyton lane torontoThe whole house is kind of open-concept. There aren't really any solid walls, which, for some, might be an issue.

9 peyton lane torontoOn the main floor is the living and dining areas. The kitchen is unconventional with the industrial-looking stainless steel counter, sink and appliances.

9 peyton lane torontoThe only downside is that there doesn't seem to be a ton of closed storage.

9 peyton lane torontoThere is one bedroom on the main floor with an en suite bathroom.

9 peyton lane torontoOn the second floor is the master bedroom, a second bedroom and a den.

9 peyton lane torontoThere is a third level, which is mostly a catwalk/green house-type area that walks out onto the roof.

9 peyton lane torontoThe light from this 360-degree panoramic window situation filters down throughout the whole house.

9 peyton lane torontoAs for outdoor space, there are two yards which, according to the listing, can fit up to 100 people. 9 peyton lane toronto

To say this home is stunning is an understatement. It's absolutely gorgeous and whoever designed it place did an amazing job.

9 peyton lane torontoAs for the studio space, it's equally gorgeous. The interior is modern, sleek and filled with bright natural light. 9 peyton lane toronto

Toronto ranked 2nd biggest housing bubble in the world

If you thought for a second that Toronto's real estate market was approachable, you might need to rethink your ideas.

Due to low rates and dire supply shortages, Toronto is now ranked the second most overvalued housing market in the world by UBS. The ranking was released as part of the Global Real Estate Bubble Index 2019.

The average cost of a house in Toronto has basically tripled over the past two decades, and new restrictions and regulations have not done much to slow it down.

Luckily, Toronto is not the only place in Canada with this undesirable title. Vancouver also made the list, coming in at sixth place.

Here's the rest of the top ten, including Toronto and Vancouver:

  1. Munich
  2. Toronto
  3. Hong Kong
  4. Amsterdam
  5. Frankfurt
  6. Vancouver
  7. Paris
  8. Zurich
  9. London
  10. San Francisco

A big crowd showed up to get selfies with Justin Trudeau next to the Toronto Sign

A hoard of Justin Trudeau fans crowded Nathan Phillips Square to catch a glimpse of the prime minister last night.

The Liberal leader was hanging out by the Toronto sign on Sunday evening to thank campaign volunteers.

The PM, who was embroiled in a blackface controversy less than two weeks ago, was all smiles outside City Hall as people stopped to take flicks and selfies with him.

He took the stage at one point wearing what looks like a custom Liberal party leather jacket.

People around him carried campaign signs for Liberal parliament member Bill Morneau, the incumbent representative of Toronto Centre.

Trudeau was in the Toronto area to unveil the 2019 Liberal Campaign Platform at the U of T Mississauga.

University of Toronto is taking steps to prevent more suicides on campus

The University of Toronto has installed temporary barriers at the Bahen Centre after a student died on Friday evening.

The death, which marks the third death to occur in the building within the last two years, according to The Varsity, has sparked discussion regarding the U of T's culture surrounding student suicide.

The Bahen Centre, which houses the information technology, computer science, and some engineering faculties, reopened on Sunday after the incident with the new barriers and a memorial, where people can leave messages.

"Historically, U of T has been hesitant to acknowledge on-campus student deaths," wrote Andy Takagi, a writer for The Varsity.

According to U of T, they had been working with architects to design permanent safety measures for the Bahen Centre since last spring. A more permanent solution is expected to be installed this fall, says the school.

The second death to happen at the Bahen Centre ocurred this March, prompting a silent student-led protest outside Simcoe Hall.

Many students have expressed disappointment in the faculty's reaction to the deaths, the first of which happened last year in June.

There are calls for better mental health supports on campus. People are also wondering why the platform from which three students jumped remained unfenced for so long.

Dramatic fire at Toronto condo building sends fire and smoke into the sky

A condo by Don Mills and Sheppard caught on fire today, resulting in massive clouds of black smoke and falling debris.

Flames were seen erupting out of windows in Emerald City condos, a high rise at 70 Forest Manor Rd., several hours ago.

Toronto Police reported that there was debris falling on the north side of the building.

The incident forced Sheppard Ave. to close east of Don Mills.

Thankfully no injuries were reported; within an hour, the fire was extinguished and Sheppard Ave. was reopened.

Toronto's ambitious new Russian restaurant closes after only eight months

One of Toronto's few Russian restaurants has closed down after less than a year in business.

Owner Serguei Kourokhtine had pivoted the Harbord Village space from French restaurant Le Notre Bistro into Russian restaurant Adelina in early 2019.

The tiny 20-seat corner space went from serving beef tartare to chicken kiev, caviar and borscht.

As of right now, Adelina has a 'For Sale' sign in the window and their website is no longer functioning. The restaurant's website has also been taken down, and the spot is listed as 'permanently closed' on Google.

No one at the restaurant could be reached for comment as to what might become of the space, or if there are any future plans for yet another cuisine change in a new location.
