When a Starbucks opens in an up-and-coming neighbourhood, many see this as a sign of increased gentrification, but the narrative isn't always that straightforward.
As GOODHOOD reports, the Starbucks at Gerrard and Jones will be closing after spending five years serving up caramel macchiatos and frappucinos. Some consider this two-storey location one of the most unique in Toronto thanks to its high ceiling, rooftop patio and local street art.
Despite the quirky design, the location didn't do enough business to satisfy corporate demands, and has now been deemed expendable. It's not as if the area is bereft of other caffeine options, so it's hard to pin down the main culprit for the lagging sales.
