Toronto gets a food market on wheels

Mobile Food Market TorontoA farmers' market on wheels was officially unveiled yesterday at Ryerson University. The Mobile Good Food Market will provide fresh and affordable produce to low-income neighbourhoods across Toronto.

This initiative is a collaborative effort between Ontario Centres of Excellence, Toronto Food Strategy, FoodShare Toronto, United Way Toronto, and the Food Policy Research Inititative (CAMH / University of Toronto), all of whom generated the necessary funds to remodel a bus donated by the TTC. The bus is designed with display shelves for the food baskets, a serving table, an awning, and is spacious enough to allow customers to step inside to shop in any weather conditions.

Mobile food market TorontoThe market is stocked with Ontario fruits and vegetables, like apples, peppers, and potatoes, as well as produce sourced from further afield. Prices are lower than your average food market in order to best serve the intended target - financially restricted communities.

The food-filled bus will make stops in Toronto's inner suburbs, as well as four locations in the west end and four in the east. For information on the locations of The Mobile Good Food Market or how to get involved, check out the Food Share website.
