Popular Vancouver coffee chain retreats from Toronto

Caffe Artigiano TorontoAfter a brief stint in Toronto, the Vancouver-based coffee chain Caffe Artigiano shut down last month. According to a Landlord's Distress Warrant posted to its front door at 67 Yonge Street, the cafe owed more than $20,000.

While Caffe Artigiano couldn't seem to pick up steam here, it's quite popular on the west coast, especially for its Spanish, or condensed milk, lattes.

Its Toronto cafe had ample seating room but evidently couldn't carve out a large enough following among caffeine seekers in the Financial District.

Aside from the McDonald's, Starbucks and Tim Hortons that dominate this stretch of Yonge there was fierce competition from nearby indie cafes including Sam James, Clockwork and Dineen.

Will you miss Caffe Artigiano? Let us know in the comments.
