We're looking for a Senior Editor to join the team

We have an immediate opening for a Senior Editor to join the blogTO team. In this role, the successful applicant will oversee editorial planning, content production, preparation and scheduling for the site. This is a full time, contract position.

The ideal candidate should have a sharp news sense and understanding of what makes a compelling article for the site.

Primary responsibilities will be to manage the everyday news flow, generate and assign article ideas to our team of of writers and photographers, write breaking news (as necessary) and monitor reader tips, social media and other news sources.

Requirements:

• At least 4-5 years of digital media editorial experience, ideally for a news or lifestyle publication.
• Experience working with Movable Type and/or Wordpress CMS.
• Working knowledge of SEO best practices and HTML in the scope of editing copy for online publications.
• Intermediate to advance photo editing skills including the ability to re-size, colour correct and format photos for the site's needs. Solid knowledge of Photoshop.
• A keen interest and expert knowledge of many of the subject areas we cover on the site, especially food, restaurants, nightlife, music, culture, events and local news.
• A knack for writing captivating headlines that will interest readers on the site and via social media channels.
• You have been a Toronto resident for at least ten years or can otherwise demonstrate an expert knowledge of the city.
• A Journalism degree is preferred.

The ideal candidate will also be able to demonstrate the following:

• You are flexible to take on evening and weekend work as required.
• You are highly organized and have a keen attention to detail.
• You have a grammar obsession and an innate ability to spot and fix typos or pare down overwritten paragraphs.
• You are willing to work independently and as part of a larger group and provide feedback to writers and photographers as applicable.
• You have a solid understanding of how to package articles for the web and mobile.
• You have experience with social media and data analytics tools such as Hootsuite, Twitter Analytics, Facebook Insights and Google Analytics.
