Toronto bars push to extend last call past 2 a.m.

last call torontoCould Toronto get its own Christmas miracle this year? Many of us complain about last call in Toronto, especially since it comes well before 2 a.m. at many establishments around the city.

But on Monday, the Toronto Music Industry Advisory Council will be at the Economic Development and Culture Committee meeting to discuss our nighttime economy, recommending that city staff begin looking at a number of initiatives related to late night activities, such as extending licensing hours.

According to CBC News, the Music Industry Advisory Council thinks 2 a.m. is just too early because it can hinder the success of music venues.

While the Music Industry Advisory Council doesn't specify a new time for last call, we've already seen what the city's like when bars close at 4 a.m. during special events such as TIFF and Nuit Blanche.

However, as CBC reports, there's already push back from groups such as the Toronto Noise Coalition who worry about more violence, vomit on the streets, and of course, excess noise in the Entertainment District.

This isn't the first time there's been a push to extend last call past 2 a.m. Back in 2014, the website lastcallto popped up and started a campaign and petition urging Toronto to make last call later.
