The Best Seamstress in Toronto

Seamstress TorontoThe best seamstress in Toronto is hard to find without a little help, and there's no way in hell you'd willingly approach a dressmaker, hoping to change the neckline of your grandmother's bridal number, without a little research. Thanks to some readers suggestions, we've zeroed in on eight women with the magic touch, none of whom are found in the back room of your local dry cleaner.

So, whether you're in a panicked frenzy over an ill-fitting dress a week before your big day or you're looking to bring your dream prom garb to life (multi-coloured sequins and all), these home studios and storefronts are tried, tested, and true.

Here is where you can find the best seamstress in Toronto.

Cherie's Dressmaking

600 Markham St., 2nd Floor, 416.531.3351

Every day, women walk into Cherie's Dressmaking in Mirvish Village by the dozen and walk away worry-free, clutching a newly altered dress that fits like a glove. It's no wonder so many trust Cherie like they do - she's worked miracles on many a bridesmaid emergency and is as quick as a wink about it. She's also a whiz at original pieces a.k.a. there's nothing Cherie can't do.

Labl by Elizabeth Oliveira

52 Seaforth Avenue, 416.504.1504

Though her Queen West Style Lab closed over a year ago, Elizabeth Oliveira still offers her custom made, repair, and alteration services by appointment only in Parkdale. Eager to fill the void left by off-the-rack average sizing, Elizabeth studied design in Portugal before diving headfirst into her passion for well-fitting garments. With past clients like Shania Twain and Ron Sexsmith, it's clear she's good at what she does.

Perfect Fit For You

172 Sherwood Avenue, 647.519.6542

Specializing in complex alterations, Nina of Perfect Fit For You doesn't fall short of her business' name. She's a hot shot at changing lapels, redesigning necklines, tailoring blazers (with lining!), and more. Her website's even got a price list, so there's no surprises come appointment day.

Needle & Thread

4 Keewatin Ave., 416.485.6107

Boasting speed and excellent customer service, Needle & Thread can get your gown alterations done in a jiffy, keeping your inner bridezilla in check. They can also alter other men's and women's garments to suit your liking, and are conveniently open for long hours six days a week.

Jean Wu

17 St. Patricks Square, 416.596.6956

Working from home, Jean Wu can alter anything at a low cost and an ultra quick turnaround time. By anything I mean she can hem five pairs of pants in a matter of hours or totally disassemble a large winter coat and downsize it to a small. If that's not impressive, I don't know what is.

Elie's Alterations

2 Cumberland St, 2nd Floor, Suit No.2, 416.967.1845

I don't know about you, but I think vintage leather jackets are the most badass of all leather jackets. Still, it's nearly impossible to find a 50's silhouette that doesn't scream, "I am a meathead." Luckily, Elie's Alterations specializes in leather and suede amongst other materials, so you can get the worn-in look without the billowing bodice and oversized armholes.

Professional Sew & Fit

780 St. Clair Avenue West, 416.657.1170

In addition to offering any type of alteration, Professional Sew & Fit can create a custom dress from scratch, working with as little as a sketch you whipped up on the TTC. Prom dresses, flower girl dresses, suits, coats, you name it - they can make it. Call 'em what you want; Professional Sew & Fit sounds like a fairy dressmother to me.

Fashions by Pearl

63 Duxbury Dr., 416.298.7899

If you're closer to the east end, Pearl Seto in Scarborough can construct a pleat-peppered, tulle-ridden, beaded masterpiece just for you. With Alfred Sung on her resume and more than 25 years of formalwear experience, Pearl's become the instant go-to for prom girls and blushing brides alike.
