Uniqlo confirms it's coming to Toronto

uniqlo torontoLong rumoured to be coming to Toronto, today Japanese clothing retailer Uniqlo has confirmed that it will open locations at the Eaton Centre and Yorkdale Mall in the fall 2016. Previous indications were that Uniqlo would start with one store and Yorkdale by way of testing the market, but the additional space freed up by the closure of Sears at the Eaton Centre means that there's prime retail available at the north end of the mall.

According to the Star, Uniqlo will join Nordstrom in taking over the currently unused space with a 28,000 square foot store located just a stone's throw away from H&M, surely one of the store's main competitors. The Yorkdale location will be part of a new section of the mall, and slightly smaller at 24,000 square feet.

So there's still a long time to wait if you've been salivating over the company's possible arrival in Toronto, but now we have a firm date. At present, there are no plans for additional stores over and above these two. Unsurprisingly, major retailers are wary of entering the Canadian market with too much of a splash given the fate of Target.
