Toronto car sharing services might be allowed to pay the City to park on residential streets

car sharing torontoWhile ridesharing, room-sharing and parking-spot-sharing services are causing a stir in Toronto, car-sharing service Car2Go is driving towards city hall to get its Smart cars parked on residential streets.

Currently, the tiny white-and-blue cars park only in municipal lots, as well as in other designated, privately owned parkades. However, according to a report from Metro News, Car2Go spokesperson Brad Ducey said the company might try to get permission to start parking in spots that require residential parking permits.

Car2Go hopes bring its proposal to the city's public works and infrastructure committee in September.

There's already a staff report outlining a pilot program for having car-sharing services on residential streets, as the Metro piece explains. Although, it hasn't been green lighted yet.

While city councillor, and public works chair, Jaye Robinson supports car-sharing programs as a means of targeting gridlock, she says they should avoid areas where residential parking is hard to come by.

Do you think car-sharing services should be able to pay for parking spots on residential streets? Let us know in the comments.
