Brunch is something of an institution in Toronto and while it's often considered a leisurely (and expensive) pastime, that doesn't mean students can't partake. Of course, when your parents visit, you might want to pick somewhere a bit more fancy.
Here are my picks for the top student friendly brunch spots in Toronto.
Sneaky Dee's
Bond with your new roommate over the F*cked Up Breakfast at this College St. bar. Named after the band (rather than the way you might feel), the hangover crushing platter offers a couple of enchilldas, a tortilla bowl filled with beans and cheese, two poached eggs swimming in salsa mole atop corn tortillas, and rice, beans, chili and ensalada.
Aunties and Uncles
There's a queue every weekend outside this brunch-only spot on Lippincott, but that's just the price you'll pay to enjoy breakfast pockets, tacos, and burgers priced under $10.
Disgraceland
Served weekends from 11am to 4pm, brunch at this Bloorcourt restaurant includes cinnamon French toast for $8, tofu scrambles for $9, and an aptly named Hangover Helper (a.k.a breakfast poutine) for $11.
Gayley's Cafe
This sunny breakfast spot on Dundas West is home to a cheap and cheerful selection of a.m. foods which can be had with a beer (well, after 11am, anyway)! Head here for straight-up bacon and eggs with homefries and toast for $7.50 or reasonably priced eggs benny for less than $10.
Starving Artist
Now with three locations, this waffle house is a definite upgrade on frozen Eggos. For excellent value, go for the handheld brunchwich ($8) featuring an egg, American cheese, secret sauce, and a choice of ham, bacon or turkey sandwiched between mini waffles.
George Street Diner
This old school diner isn't as cheap as others in the 'hood, but situated just a four minute walk from the King St. campus, you'll find plenty of fellow George Brown students populating the retro booths. The ultra filling Irish breakfast is among the house faves. For about $10, you'll get two eggs, a choice of breakfast meats, grilled tomato, baked beans and soda bread.
Morning Glory
Also in the vicinity of George Brown, this cozy cafe offers eggs, toast and rosti for $7, while breakfast burritos stuffed with scrambled eggs, green onions, mushrooms, cheddar and guacamole sell for $5.
Future Bakery
The cafeteria-style service at this student friendly joint in the Annex isn't especially glamorous, but it's hard to go wrong with two egg breakfasts complete with a choice of bacon, ham or sausage, and toast, potato wedges or salad for $8. Pancakes, BLTs, and grilled cheese sandwiches go for a dollar less.
Coach House
Don't be deterred by the dated exterior of this greasy spoon near Yonge and Wellesley. It might not look as slick as some newcomers near Ryerson, but the breakfasts are classic, cheap and generous, and the service is friendly.
White Brick Kitchen
Prices aren't exorbitant considering the quality, consistency and care put in to the brunch dishes served on Sundays at this Koreatown restaurant. While a classic breakfast will cost you $10, you'll find more exciting options too. The sage sausage bennies ($11) built on house-made english muffins could easily command higher prices but mercifully don't.
