Power to be fully restored across Toronto today

Toronto ice stormToronto Hydro promises that it will (finally) have power restored to customers across the city today, over a week after a devastating ice storm caused massive outages throughout the GTA. At a press conference this morning at city hall, Mayor Ford and Hydro officials reported that roughly 700 residences remained without power this morning, a more than manageable number for crews to knock off before day's end.

Last Monday, some 300,000 customers were without power at the height of the crisis. "We've never had a storm like this in Toronto's history," Ford said of the harrowing week. Although it's too early to project the total cost of the storm to the city, Toronto Hydro estimated today that it will likely cost the company between $8 to $10 million. The Mayor is set to request subsidy from the Ontario Disaster Relief Assistance Program at the next meeting of city council on January 10th.
