Weekend events in Toronto July 15-17 2016

weekend events torontoWeekend events in Toronto really prove that summer is in full effect! Yoga! Festivals! Concerts! Non-stop dance parties! Sure, there are also many opportunities to find peace and quiet, but lots of noise if you want to get your blood pumping.

Here are my top picks for weekend events this July 15-17.

SPORTS

The Honda Indy (Exhibition Place)
I usually equate the Honda Indy with endless noise, audible from places all over the west side of the city. I guess we could also equate it with amazing cars and drivers and beer and bad sunglasses. Anyway, be warned, this is happening.

Yoga Meltdown (July 17, Centre Island)
The more peaceful part of the Festival of India weekend, this is a giant, free day of yoga on the island. Dozens of teachers and lessons and yoga-related things going on in the breezy grasses of Centre Island.

SHOPPING

Theatrix Garage Sale (July 16, Theatrix Costume House)
You know when Halloween comes around and you're all like "crap, I can't wear this wig/sheet/dress/garbage bag again this year!" Check out this once-in-a-lifetime costume house sale. Just get there early 'cause you know all the city's drag queens will be there snatching up the good stuff first.

Maker's Magazine Launch Party & Pop-Up Shop (July 16, RawSpace)
Help celebrate issue two of Maker's Mag alongside 45 makers, lovely creative people and snacks. There will be lots of Canadian brands, jewelry and of course, mags.

Burger Pawty (July 17, Untitled & Co.)
There will be a "fresh lineup of art, fashion, music, food" ... but it's mostly a mind-blowing conceptual slider fest. Seriously, check out the official site for the stunning creations you'll find at this food and shopping party.

FESTIVALS & FOOD

Ritmo Y Color (July 15-17, Harbourfront Centre)
The streets of Mexico come alive with this three-day fiesta of Latin food, music, performance, culture and did I mention food? This is the perfect summer, waterfront date day/night activity.

Night it Up! (July 15-17, Markham Civic Centre)
This one's in Markham, but it's modelled after night markets in Taiwan and Hong Kong, so it's one of the most popular and vibrant of the year. The weekend event will be packed with Asian street foods, food trucks, game booths, merchandise vendors and live performances. Check out highlights from last year's event.

Junction Night Market (July 16, Pacific Avenue, just north of Dundas Street West)
Local food, craft beer, cider and wine are highlights at this west side night spot. This is a most community minded affair (a.k.a. less lineups, more relaxed vibe) and all the proceeds go to help members of the community gain access to fresh and healthy food through local food programs.

Festival of South Asia (July 16-17, Gerrard Street East)
Experience South Asian culture from noon to 11 p.m. on Gerrard Street. Concerts, exhibitions, book launches, literary debates, competitions, and of course delicious food.

Festival of India (July 16-17, Yonge-Dundas Square/Centre Island)
This colourful fest starts with a parade from Bloor and Yonge street, all the way down to Queens Quay, where the party continues on Toronto Island. Celebrating a rich tradition, the two days of performances on the Island include singing, dancing and drama.

Bastid's BBQ (July 17, Honest Ed's)
Skratch Bastid brings his BBQ bash back to the Honest Ed's parking lot, this time with special guest DJ Jazzy Jeff. Home of the Brave, La Carnita and Sweet Jesus will be there to feed you. There will also be beer, booze and hot sauce available.

Ontario Oyster Festival (July 17, Rodney's Oyster House)
$35 for advanced tickets, $45 Day of at the door gets you two drinks and one plate of five Oysters. Once you're inside it's a feast! $5 drinks, $5 for 5 Oysters, $25 Lobsters, rain or shine... check out the full food lineup on their Facebook page.

MUSIC

Jessy Lanza (July 15, Lee's Palace)
There's a lot of good musical happenings in the city this weekend, but none cooler than Hamilton's Jessy Lanza at Lee's. Full disclosure, she's one of my top picks for the Polaris Prize short list (I'm a juror), but don't let that sway you; let beats and things from her new record move you. This one's gonna be hot.

DANCING

Sunset Sessions with Carl Craig (July 16, Sunnyside Pavilion)
The city's heels are on fire this weekend! Not only is there a small mountain of dance parties happening on Friday and Saturday nights, but Detroit electronic legend Carl Craig is coming! And he's DJing outside right next to the water at Sunnyside Pavilion! A bunch of A-grade local DJs support him, starting at 4 p.m.
