Mail delivery in Toronto could stop at end of this week

canada post strikeYou've got mail? Maybe not in Toronto. That's because Canada Post issued a 72-hour lockout notice to the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (or CUPW). This could result in a work stoppage on Friday.

Canada Post has been in negotiations with the CUPW for months. As the threat of a work stoppage or strike loomed over Canada, fewer packages and pieces of mail went through Canada Post, leading to a business decline.

So, as the Canadian Press writes, Canada Post is looking to suspend its collective agreement on Friday, mainly because of this decline, the CUPW's strike mandate as well as the long drawn-out negotiations.

"The issuing of the notice does not necessarily mean that Canada Post will not be operating on Friday. It allows the Corporation to take measures that are necessary to respond to the changing business reality," reads a Canada Post news release.

According to the Canadian Press, one of the main sticking points in these negotiations revolves around changes to pension plans.
