Pet and dog adoption in Toronto

pet adoption torontoPet and dog adoption organizations abound in Toronto. Whether you're in the market for a new pooch, cat, rabbit or a reptile, these facilities will get you a new friend faster than Facebook. Who knows, maybe your new pal will even rise to Instagram stardom?

Here's a roundup of places where you can adopt a new four-legged friend in Toronto.

Toronto Humane Society
Located at the corner of Queen East and River, the Toronto Humane Society is the most popular pet adoption source in the city. The shelter houses cats and dogs of all ages, plus a ton of small pets like rabbits, turtles and birds. If you're not ready to fully commit, you can always apply to foster an animal.

Etobicoke Humane Society
The Etobicoke Humane Society is an independently run operation that's kept afloat by volunteers and donations. It looks after both canines and cats, most of which have been surrendered by owners who could/would no longer care for their pets. If you're in the market for a furry friend on the west side, it's worth checking out.

Toronto Animal Services
Toronto Animal Services is the "jack of all trades," as far as pet adoption is concerned. It has several locations around the city offering everything from spaying and neutering to pet licensing. Depending when and where you visit, you'll find cats, dogs and/or small pets up for adoption.

Annex Cat Rescue
The Annex Cat Rescue helps takes homeless cats off the streets and moves them into forever homes. The volunteer-run operation gives medical attention, food, and shelter to unwanted or abandoned cats around the city. It has both fostering and adoption programs, if you're looking to help out short-term or take one home for good.

North Toronto Cat Rescue
North Toronto Cat Rescue serves Toronto, Markham, Thornhill, Richmond Hill, Aurora, Newmarket, and the South York Region. The shelter's goal is to save cats and kittens, taking them off the streets or away from abusive owners. You'll find felines of all ages and breeds up for adoption here.
